In February 2023, Amelia was hospitalized with symptoms of frequent urination, fatigue, and unquenchable thirst. Amelia was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of 4. At diagnosis, her A1c was 11.4 and her blood sugar was 535. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that she will live with for the rest of her life, she will never grow out of it and changes in diet will not make a difference. Finger sticks, device changes, carb counting, and insulin dosing is our everyday life. High and low blood sugars can cause long-term damage to her body and brain.
We are raising money to get a medical alert dog for Amelia. The medical alert dog will help us catch the highs and lows sooner. The Dexcom that she wears to read her blood sugars has about a 20-minute delay, which can be detrimental. We want this dog to help prevent extreme highs and lows to give Amelia the best quality of life possible.
