<div>On 9th July 2026, 14 people died in the Los Gallardos-Bedar wildfire in Spain.  We are their families and friends.

<div>We lost our parents, our brothers and sisters, our partners, our relatives and our friends. For fourteen people, an ordinary day turned into unimaginable fear and suffering.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>For us, this tragedy is deeply personal. But what happened in Bédar also raises questions that extend far beyond our own loss. We are raising funds to support legal representation, independent experts and specialist reports so that the deaths of our loved ones can be fully investigated. We need to understand what happened, why so many people became trapped, and whether more could have been done to protect them.

<div><strong>The tragedy in context:</strong>

</div>
<div>The fire became the deadliest wildfire in Spain in the 21st century. Yet its geographic scale was comparatively limited: approximately 5,200 hectares burned and around 1,600 people were evacuated. For comparison, the Sierra Oeste wildfire emergency around Madrid one week later affected approximately 27,000 hectares, while more than 55,000 people were evacuated or confined, without loss of life.

<div><strong>Why did fourteen people die in Bédar? What went wrong?</strong>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>There is another question that makes a thorough investigation particularly important: how was it possible that two separate groups of people, each consisting of several families, were independently caught and trapped by the flames?
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>The fact that multiple families in two different groups suffered the same outcome suggests that their deaths cannot be explained simply by individual decisions or actions. It points instead to the need to examine whether there were broader, structural circumstances that left people exposed to danger in ways they could not reasonably control.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Several of the victims’ families have therefore come together across different countries to seek answers.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>We believe those answers require a full and evidence-based examination of the wildfire prevention and emergency-planning measures that existed before the fire, how the fire started and developed, how the emergency response was organised and communicated, why the fire could not be contained before becoming so deadly, and above all how so many people ultimately became trapped by the flames.

<div><strong>Why the families are taking part in the judicial proceedings:</strong>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Families of the deceased came together to participate in the judicial investigations as 'acusación particular' - private prosecutors under Spanish law.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>By taking an active role in the judicial investigation, the families seek to ensure that all relevant evidence is examined, appropriate investigative measures can be requested, independent experts can be consulted where necessary, and every reasonable question surrounding the deaths is pursued.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>The objective is to identify and understand the failure points and structural circumstances that allowed this emergency to result in such an exceptional loss of life.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Only when those weaknesses are identified can they be corrected.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>That makes this investigation important far beyond the families directly affected.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Communities throughout Spain, and across other fire-prone regions, face the threat of wildfires. If shortcomings in prevention, preparedness, communication, evacuation, emergency response or other systems contributed to what happened in Bédar, identifying those shortcomings may help prevent similar failures from costing lives in another community.
</div>

<div>In that sense, the questions raised by this tragedy concern everyone who lives in an environment where wildfire is a foreseeable risk.
</div>

<div>That is why we are asking for your help.

<div><strong>Why we need financial support:</strong>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Participating meaningfully in a complex judicial investigation requires substantial resources. Depending on how the case develops, the total cost is estimated to be approximately €35,000–€40,000 per family. With several families participating, the combined costs could ultimately approach €250,000–€300,000.

<div>We have therefore set a fundraising goal of €300,000.
</div>

<div>These donations are not intended to compensate the families for their loss or damages. No amount of money could place a value on the lives that were lost.

<div>Their purpose is different: to provide the resources necessary to understand why these deaths occurred and to ensure that financial limitations do not prevent the families from pursuing the answers.
</div>

<div><strong>How the funds will be used:</strong>

<div>Funds raised through this campaign will be used exclusively for documented costs directly connected with the judicial proceedings and the investigation surrounding them.

<div>These may include legal representation and advice, court representation and procedural costs, independent forensic and technical experts, expert reports and assessments, professional examination of evidence, translation and interpretation, specialist advice, necessary travel and accommodation directly required for participation in the judicial proceedings, appeals or further legal action, and other documented professional or procedural expenses necessary for the case.

<div>The fund is not intended to provide compensation, damages or personal financial support to the organisers or participating families.

<div><strong>What will happen to any money that remains:</strong>

<div>If, once the judicial proceedings have concluded and all associated legal and professional expenses have been paid, money remains in the fund, subject to applicable legal and tax requirements, remaining funds will be donated to non-profit organisations and good causes working in wildfire prevention, emergency preparedness, community safety or closely related fields.

<div>In this way, every contribution will ultimately serve the same purpose for which this campaign was created: to learn from tragedy and help prevent future loss of life.

<div><strong>Behind the 14 victims are their families.</strong>

<div>They were parents, partners, relatives, neighbours and friends. Many had come from other countries and had chosen this part of Spain as their home.

<div>Behind every victim is a family now trying to understand how an ordinary day ended in such an extraordinary loss of life.

<div>Since the fire, those families have had to grieve while simultaneously navigating an unfamiliar legal system, often in a language they do not speak. They have had to locate lawyers and experts, understand Spanish judicial procedures, obtain and assess information and coordinate across several countries.

<div>We are not asking the public to decide who was responsible.

<div>We are asking for the opportunity to find out what happened.

<div>Perdimos a nuestros padres y madres, hermanos y hermanas, parejas, familiares y amigos. Para catorce personas, aquel día que había comenzado como cualquier otro terminó en un horror inimaginable.

<div>Para nosotros, esta tragedia es profundamente personal. Pero lo ocurrido en Bédar también plantea preguntas que van mucho más allá de nuestra propia pérdida.
</div>

</div>
<div>El incendio se convirtió en el incendio forestal más mortífero de España en el siglo XXI. Sin embargo, su extensión geográfica fue comparativamente limitada: ardieron aproximadamente 5.200 hectáreas y unas 1.600 personas fueron evacuadas. A modo de comparación, la emergencia provocada por el incendio de Sierra Oeste, en los alrededores de Madrid una semana después, afectó a aproximadamente 27.000 hectáreas, mientras que más de 55.000 personas fueron evacuadas o confinadas, sin que se produjera ninguna víctima mortal.

<div>Hay otra pregunta que hace especialmente importante una investigación exhaustiva: ¿cómo fue posible que dos grupos distintos de personas, cada uno formado por varias familias, quedaran atrapados de forma independiente por las llamas?

<div>El hecho de que varias familias, pertenecientes a dos grupos diferentes, sufrieran el mismo desenlace plantea la necesidad de examinar si estas muertes pueden explicarse únicamente por decisiones o acciones individuales. También hace necesario investigar si existieron circunstancias más amplias y estructurales que dejaron a estas personas expuestas a un peligro que razonablemente no podían controlar.

<div>Por ello, varias de las familias de las víctimas se han unido desde distintos países para buscar respuestas.
</div>

<div>Creemos que esas respuestas requieren un examen completo y basado en pruebas de las medidas de prevención de incendios y de planificación de emergencias existentes antes del incendio, de cómo se inició y evolucionó el fuego, de cómo se organizó y comunicó la respuesta de emergencia, de por qué el incendio no pudo ser contenido antes de adquirir consecuencias tan mortales y, sobre todo, de cómo tantas personas acabaron atrapadas por las llamas.

<div><strong>Por qué las familias participan en el procedimiento judicial</strong>
</div>

</div>
<div>Las familias de las personas fallecidas se han unido para personarse en la investigación judicial como acusación particular.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Al asumir un papel activo en la investigación judicial, las familias pretenden garantizar que se examine toda la prueba relevante, que puedan solicitarse las diligencias de investigación pertinentes, que se pueda recurrir a expertos independientes cuando sea necesario y que se investiguen todas las cuestiones razonables relacionadas con las muertes.

<div>El objetivo es identificar y comprender los puntos de fallo y las circunstancias estructurales que permitieron que esta emergencia provocara una pérdida de vidas tan excepcional.

<div>Solo cuando se identifiquen esas deficiencias podrán corregirse.

<div>Por ello, esta investigación es importante mucho más allá de las familias directamente afectadas.

<div>Comunidades de toda España, así como de otras regiones expuestas a incendios forestales, se enfrentan a esta amenaza. Si las deficiencias en la prevención, la preparación, la comunicación, la evacuación, la respuesta de emergencia u otros sistemas contribuyeron a lo ocurrido en Bédar, identificarlas puede ayudar a evitar que fallos similares vuelvan a costar vidas en otra comunidad.

<div>En este sentido, las preguntas que plantea esta tragedia conciernen a todas las personas que viven en entornos donde los incendios forestales constituyen un riesgo previsible.

<div>Por qué necesitamos apoyo económico
</div>

<div>Participar de forma efectiva en una investigación judicial compleja requiere recursos importantes. Según las estimaciones iniciales, el coste total podría situarse aproximadamente entre 35.000 y 40.000 € por familia. Con varias familias participando, los costes conjuntos podrían llegar finalmente a 250.000–300.000 €.

<div>Por ello, hemos establecido un objetivo de recaudación de 300.000 €.

<div>Estas donaciones no están destinadas a compensar a las familias por su pérdida ni por los daños sufridos. Ninguna cantidad de dinero podría poner precio a las vidas que se perdieron.

<div>Su finalidad es otra: proporcionar los recursos necesarios para comprender por qué se produjeron estas muertes y garantizar que las limitaciones económicas no impidan a las familias obtener respuestas.

<div>Estos gastos pueden incluir representación y asesoramiento jurídico, representación procesal y costes del procedimiento, peritos forenses y técnicos independientes, informes y evaluaciones periciales, análisis profesional de pruebas, traducción e interpretación, asesoramiento especializado, desplazamientos y alojamiento necesarios directamente para la participación en el procedimiento judicial, recursos u otras actuaciones legales posteriores, así como otros gastos profesionales o procesales documentados que sean necesarios para el caso.
