<div>PFAS sind langlebige Moleküle, die sich in der Umwelt und im Körper anreichern. Sie stehen im Verdacht, <strong>gesundheitsschädlich</strong> zu sein. Grenzwerte sind bereits vielerorts erreicht oder wurden überschritten. Bundesbehörden verschärfen Grenzwerte, das Europäische Parlament bemüht sich, die Nutzung dieser Chemikalien einzuschränken. (European Parliament and Council, 2020) Diese werden zunehmend in Kleidung, Kosmetika, wasserabweisenden Beschichtungen von Pfannen, Jacken etc. eingesetzt. <div>Hier wollen wir mit unserem Projekt <em>Sense </em><strong>PFAS</strong><em>t</em> eine dringend benötigte Lösung anbieten! Unser Projekt konzentriert sich auf die Entwicklung eines hefebasierten Systems zur Detektion von PFAS. Mithilfe moderner gentechnischer Methoden entwerfen wir Hefezellen, die in der Lage sein sollen PFAS, wie beispielsweise Perfluoroctansäure (PFOA) und Perfluoroctansulfonsäure (PFOS) gezielt zu erkennen und messbar zu machen. Hefe bietet als Organismus hervorragende Voraussetzungen, um die Sensitivität solcher Biosensoren zu steigern. (Wahid et al., 2023)

<div>Langfristig soll das System so konzipiert sein, dass es sich prinzipiell in bestehende Wasseraufbereitungsinfrastrukturen integrieren ließe und somit einen Beitrag zum Umwelt- und Gesundheitsschutz leisten kann. Bestehende Ansätze zur PFAS-Detektion sind häufig technisch sehr aufwändig, teuer und benötigen Tage bis ein Ergebnis vorliegt. (Sankhla et al., 2025) Unser Fokus liegt auf der Entwicklung eines hefebasierten biologischen Sensors, der PFAS schnell, kostengünstig und in Echtzeit detektieren kann.

<div>Aufbauend darauf möchten wir auch untersuchen, ob solche biologischen Systeme perspektivisch auch für weiterführende Ansätze, etwa im Hinblick auf einen möglichen biologischen Abbau langkettiger PFAS in weniger toxische Verbindungen, geeignet sein könnten.

<div>Unser Projekt entsteht im Rahmen des<strong> iGEM-Wettbewerbs 2026</strong> (<a href="https://igem.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">iGEM</a> ), dem weltweit größten studentischen Wettbewerb für synthetische Biologie. Über 400 Teams präsentieren jährlich ihre Projekte auf dem Grand Jamboree 2026 in Paris. Regelmäßig gehen aus den teilnehmenden Projekten Start-Ups hervor, die Forschungsprojekte dauerhaft und gewinnbringend anwenden.

<div>PFAS are persistent molecules that accumulate in the environment and the body. They are suspected of being <strong>harmful to health</strong>. Limit values have already been reached or exceeded in many places. Federal authorities are tightening limit values, and the European Parliament is working to restrict the use of these chemicals. (European Parliament and Council, 2020) These are increasingly used in clothing, cosmetics, water-repellent coatings on pans, jackets and more. <div>This is where we want to offer a much-needed solution with our project <em>Sense </em><strong>PFAS</strong><em>t</em>! Our project focuses on developing a yeast-based system for detecting PFAS. Using modern genetic engineering methods, we are designing yeast cells that will be able to specifically detect and measure PFAS such as perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS). As an organism, yeast offers excellent conditions for increasing the sensitivity of such biosensors. (Wahid et al., 2023)

<div>In the long term, the system should be designed in such a way that it can be integrated into existing water treatment infrastructures, thereby contributing to environmental and health protection. Existing approaches to PFAS detection are often technically very complex, expensive, and take days to produce results. (Sankhla et al., 2025)

<div><strong>Our focus is on developing a yeast-based biological sensor that can detect PFAS rapidly, cost-effectively, and in real time</strong>.

<div>Building on this, we also want to investigate whether such biological systems could potentially be suitable for further approaches, for example with regard to the possible biological degradation of long-chain PFAS into less toxic compounds.

<div>Our project is being developed as part of the <strong>iGEM competition</strong> <strong>2026</strong> (iGEM), the world's largest student competition for synthetic biology. Every year, over <strong>400 teams</strong> present their projects at the <strong>Grand Jamboree 2026 in Paris</strong>. The participating projects regularly give rise to start-ups that apply research projects in a sustainable and profitable manner.

<div>Due to current budget cuts in the German education sector, our university is currently unable to provide sufficient financial support for our participation in the iGEM competition. However, participation involves high research costs as well as travel and participation costs for the Grand Jamboree 2026 in Paris.
