Legal Defense vs Brent Comyack

Brent Comyack is suing us for telling the world about his sexual misconduct (our lawyers have told us to say that this conclusion is based on the “disclosed facts” of the allegations we have read). Earlier this year, Brent was outed as a sexual abuser and predator all over social media after our friend tested positive for the opioid methadone after returning home from a bar. Allegations surfaced ranging from wildly criminal to ordinary cruelty and violation (follow the links for more -- thanks, Babs. )
Rather than simply accept consequences for his actions, or even just disappear, Brent Comyack sued a seemingly random group of people for defamation. We, four friends of the woman he drugged, are among the defendants.
We spoke the truth, and Brent is trying to silence us.
Comyack’s case has already caused huge emotional as well as financial stresses for us. We are all young women in our early 20s and early 30s and risk bankrupting ourselves fighting this lawsuit. Our attorneys’ bills, which our attorneys have kindly deferred until we could make this fundraising effort, are starting to rack up and the burden will soon more than we can bear. This is why we are reaching out for support.
This Go Fund Me seeks to fund legal defense for us in Brent’s SLAPP (strategic lawsuit against public participation). All money will go directly to paying our attorneys, and any money left over at the end of the suit will go to assist the other pro bono clients our attorneys serve.
The case’s tide is already moving in our favor, too. Initially, Brent Comyack refused to even tell us what statements he was suing over! Our attorneys made a motion to force Comyack to file a more detailed, and less legally sparse complaint,which the court granted (in a lengthy order). After describing Comyack’scomplaint and the way it was written, the Court wrote that “not only is a more definite statement required, but Plaintiff’s First Count for defamation is deficient.” This win, and the momentum it represents, is very exciting, but we still have a long way to go.
With your help we can continue to fight against Brent’s attempts to silence us.

Donations will be made to our legal team as the “beneficiaries” of this fundraiser, for them to bill against during this case for their attorneys’ fees and related expenses (like, for example, the fee that New Jersey charges to defend a lawsuit!). Donations are non-refundable and are not tax-deductible. Excess funds may be used to fund similar litigation by agreement with our lawyers.
