Help Us Expand Debate Access Across Virginia

We’re the East Coast Debate Initiative of Virginia (ECDI-VA)—a student-led grassroots movement committed to building equity in speech and debate across under-resourced communities.

In Southern states like ours, access to debate is often limited by geography, funding, and systemic neglect. Many students lack qualified coaches, can’t afford debate camps, or aren’t given the chance to compete at national levels. These barriers silence too many voices before they’re ever heard.

We created ECDI-VA in direct response. As active debaters in the Tidewater region, we’ve seen how a lack of infrastructure holds students back. So, we set out to build what’s missing.

Our mission is to empower students through critical thinking, empathy, and civil discourse.

Our Tangible Goals:

-Partner with 16 public high schools and middle schools in our community

-Raise $5,000 to fund program development and outreach

-Host free, accessible tournaments and community debate events

-Produce open-access educational content (videos, curriculum, workshops)
