My name is Phenious Chuma. I am married to Annie and we have two children, Ethan is 4 years old and Tahlia is 16 months old. I was born and raised in Malawi, a country found in South East Africa. I am a second oldest child in the family of fifteen children. Growing up, I experienced unimaginable poverty spending many days without food. By Gods grace, I made it to college. While in college God called me to go back to my community in Salima district to serve orphans and other children experiencing the hardship of poverty. In 2012, I started a ministry called Love in Action Ministry with the aim of reaching out to orphans and other vulnerable children with educational and spiritual support. Today, Love in Action serves over 400 children with daily tutoring, daily meals, and also high school sponsorship.
Seeing that the ministry that God called us to serve was growing, we decided to further my studies in leadership and community development so that we are well prepared to serve effectively. I enrolled for a Masters degree in Organizational Leadership at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. This semester I am taking three classes, one is called Strategies of effective Leadership, second is Sustainable Community development and the last is called Conflict Resolution in an organization setting. Our desire is to learn and take the knowledge to Malawi and continue to serve the communities ravaged by poverty. (Malawi is now the poorest country in the world according to the United Nations)
OUR CHALLENGE
Our other plan was to find a job on campus (my visa only allows me to work on campus) but unfortunately, despite several applications, nothing has come so far. We are in an awkward situation, we haven't found a house yet and our challenge is that we have no money to meet our daily needs. We are expecting a baby boy (we have named him Uluthando) in November and this is making our situation even direr. We are trying to raise this money to help us pay for our housing and our daily needs including school expenses. Please, help us attain this education, it will help us impact our community. I have a passion to be part of the change Malawi needs. Thank you.
