At the National Youth Leadership Council (NYLC), we’re not just preparing young people to lead—we’re preparing them to transform the world around them with the values and principles that matter most.

> Civic Responsibility: Young people aren’t just future leaders, they are powerful changemakers shaping our world right now. We empower them to serve, speak out, and step up—contributing to a more just, equitable, and united society.
- Youth as Solutions Operation Grow : In East Orange, NJ, a team of young changemakers turned a vacant lot into a vibrant community garden to fight food insecurity and inspire sustainable living. As part of NYLC’s Youth as Solutions 9/11 Day cohort, these youth researched systemic food injustice, partnered with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, and created a hub where neighbors could gather, learn, and nourish both their bodies and their spirits. Beyond growing produce, they cultivated a deep sense of purpose, empathy, and responsibility. Their work reflected not only a response to a local crisis, but also a broader commitment to justice and unity—an embodiment of what civic leadership can look like in action. “[This helped us] open our eyes about plants and our community. > Integrity: Our programs teach young leaders to align their actions with their values—even when it’s hard. They learn to stand firm in what’s right, building trust and credibility in their communities.
> Empathy: We help young people understand and value diverse perspectives so they can lead with compassion, foster inclusion, and create space where everyone is heard.
- Youth as Solutions Building Belonging : In New Jersey, a youth team from Refugee Assistance Partners (RAP) used NYLC’s service-learning framework to support refugee youth in their community. After listening to families, they created enrichment programs—from music and art to cultural events and field trips—that helped children feel seen, connected, and at home. “At Ellis Island, one student said, ‘That’s kind of what we went through.’ It was the first time many felt safe enough to share their stories.” —Anu, Adult Mentor. Now a permanent part of RAP’s programming, this project shows how empathy and youth leadership can transform lives.
> Collaboration: Leadership doesn’t happen in isolation. We guide youth in working in partnership with community and each other, respecting differences, and building collective solutions that reflect the strength of many voices.
