A Lifeline for individuals with Down Syndrome

Donation protected

My name is Anne-Rose, and I have the immense privilege of being a sister to someone with Down syndrome. Growing up, my sister was my world, but I quickly learned how harsh and unforgiving society can be toward individuals with disabilities. The stigma attached to Down syndrome was so strong where we grew up that I often found myself in constant battles—literally fighting off bullies or standing up for my sister’s right to simply be treated with kindness and respect.

Witnessing how my sister was marginalised and misunderstood was heartbreaking. It ignited a fire within me to change the narrative surrounding individuals with Down syndrome and intellectual disabilities. As I grew older, I made it my life’s mission to advocate for their inclusion and ensure that they are seen for who they truly are—capable, vibrant, and deserving of every opportunity to thrive.

Last year, I had the incredible honour of being appointed to the Board of Trustees for the Down Syndrome Foundation of Nigeria (DSFN). This organisation is close to my heart because it aligns so deeply with the values I’ve held all my life: dignity, inclusion, and empowerment for individuals with Down syndrome. DSFN has been a beacon of hope for families across Nigeria, providing therapy, education, vocational training, and essential support services. But now, we are embarking on a transformative project that will impact generations to come: MOVAS House.

Why We Are Fundraising:

MOVAS House is a dream that is on the verge of becoming a reality, and we need your help to bring it to life. This state-of-the-art residential and resource center will provide a safe haven for children and young adults with Down syndrome, offering them specialised care, therapy, education, and vocational training that will empower them to live independent, fulfilling lives.

MOVAS House is named after five incredible self-advocates—Maria, Onyisi, Vivian, Agiliga, and Solomon— The first 5 students of the Foundation when it became operational in 2001 and who have shown us all what is possible when individuals with Down syndrome are given the right support. This project is more than just a building; it’s a lifeline for those who require specialised care and lifelong support. MOVAS House will not only offer a safe and nurturing environment for long-term care, but also includes a comprehensive succession plan to ensure that individuals continue to receive the care they need, even when their families are no longer able to provide for them. This facility is designed to give peace of mind to families, knowing their loved ones will be supported for life in a space that fosters independence, dignity, and inclusion.

Your donation will directly support the construction of MOVAS House and the life-changing services it will offer. By contributing, you are doing so much more than helping to build a facility. You are giving children and young adults with Down syndrome the tools they need to reach their full potential. You are helping families, like mine, who have fought against stigma and marginalisation to find a community that embraces them. And, most importantly, you are creating a future where every individual with Down syndrome is valued for their abilities, not defined by their limitations.

The facility will offer:

Therapy and Rehabilitation: Physical, occupational, and speech therapy to support developmental milestones.
Inclusive Education: Tailored educational programs designed to meet the unique learning needs of each child.
Vocational Training: Hands-on skills training to equip young adults for independent living and employment.
Safe Residential Spaces: Semi-independent living spaces that provide a home-like environment for individuals with Down syndrome and intellectual disabilities.
Family Support Services: Counselling, workshops, and resources for families and caregivers to ensure they have the tools needed to support their loved ones.
Community Engagement Areas: Spaces designed to promote social interaction, recreational activities, and public awareness about Down syndrome.

This cause is deeply personal to me, and I know firsthand how much it will mean to every child, parent, and caregiver who walks through the doors of MOVAS House. Please consider making a donation today, so together, we can build a world where individuals with Down syndrome are not only included but celebrated for who they are.

Thank you for your generosity and compassion.

With heartfelt gratitude,
Anne-Rose
