<div>To address the <strong>decline of architecture, </strong>the association <a href="https://www.latablerondearchitecture.com/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">La Table Ronde de l’Architecture</a> plans to found <strong>the first School of Architecture &amp; Crafts in Europe.</strong>

<div><strong>Why are we raising funds?</strong>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>The situation is simple: <strong>architecture</strong> is becoming uglier, <strong>heritage</strong> is deteriorating, <strong>cities</strong> are spreading into monotonous, lifeless housing developments, and the green <strong>countryside</strong> is being replaced by slabs of concrete. Everywhere the same industrial materials, the same chemical insulation, the same shapes taken from trendy architecture magazines.

<div>How many years before these flimsy houses start to collapse? How many years before water finds its way through flat roofs? How many years before the millions of tons of concrete poured into suburban neighborhoods turn into rubble and dust? <strong>Architecture</strong>, which once aimed to last as long as possible, <strong>has become a short-lived investment product</strong>. Building makes money; demolishing and rebuilding makes even more.

<div><strong>What can be done?</strong>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>The association La Table Ronde de l’Architecture wants to tackle the root of the problem: <strong>the education of architects</strong>. This education, now failing, is the cause of the deterioration of our living environment and, consequently, of life itself.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>But there are many<strong> remedies</strong> to the problems we have described. In place of reinforced concrete, there is timber framing and stone or brick masonry. In place of flat roofs, sloped roofs covered with tiles, slate, or stone slabs. In place of chemical insulation, there is hemp, cork, earth, and straw. In place of PVC, traditional joinery. In place of steel, timber structures. In place of synthetic lawns, the art of gardening.

<div>We could multiply examples of <strong>these trades</strong>, rooted in thousands of years of architectural tradition, now neglected and abandoned in favor of a consumerist, polluting, industrial architecture: carpenters, masons, stonecarvers, roofers, joiners, brickmakers, thatchers, blacksmiths, lime burners, sculptors, and many more.

<div>These<strong> traditional skills </strong>must be brought back to the heart of architectural education. This is the cornerstone of our teaching approach: we want to reconcile the architect and the craftsman.
</div>

</div>
<div><strong>A school of builders</strong>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>This reconciliation will take the form of a new school: <strong>the first school of architecture &amp; crafts in Europe</strong>. This school will not train architects in the academic sense, but <strong>builders</strong>. Students will receive both:
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<ul>
<li><strong>theoretical courses</strong> (drawing, geometry, construction, history, and philosophy),
</li>
<li>and <strong>practical training </strong>(masonry, carpentry, stone cutting, joinery, lime and earth plastering, cob, ceramics, engraving, and painting).
</li>
</ul>

<div>Located in a <strong>17th-century Alsatian farmhouse</strong> in the village of <a href="https://maps.app.goo.gl/6dn27PStD1CkZv9U9" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><strong>Westhoffen</strong></a> (Bas-Rhin, France), the buildings themselves will be the first subject of study.

<div>The <strong>restoration and transformation of the farm</strong>, with the help of students through <strong>hands-on workshop projects</strong>, will put teaching into practice. Students will learn by building their school, stone by stone.

<div>Ultimately, <strong>the school will include:</strong>

<li>several classrooms and drawing studios,
</li>
<li>a large library,
</li>
<li>workshops for stone cutting, masonry, carpentry, joinery, ceramics, stone engraving, and decorative arts,
</li>
<li>a “student house” with bedrooms, bathrooms, dining room, and kitchen,
</li>
<li>a community café open to the public, serving as a meeting place for students, craftspeople, and local residents.

<div>More than just an educational institution, we aim to create a place for living, learning, and mutual support, where people of all backgrounds, ages, and cultures come together around a shared goal: learning the age-old traditions of a <strong>beautiful</strong>, <strong>durable</strong>, and profoundly <strong>humane</strong> <strong>architecture</strong>.

<div><strong>Why do we need your help?</strong>

<div>We are launching a <strong>fundraising campaign</strong> to:

<li>start the initial <strong>restoration </strong>and<strong> conversion </strong>work,

<li><strong>purchase materials and tools</strong>,
</li>
<li><strong>pay the master craftsmen</strong> who will lead the <strong>training workshops</strong>,

<li>and <strong>hire craftmen</strong> for work that cannot be carried out by students for safety or technical reasons.

<div><strong>Pourquoi nous collectons des fonds ?</strong>
</div>

</div>
<div>Le constat est simple : <strong>l’architecture s’enlaidit, le patrimoine s’abîme, les villes s’étalent</strong> <strong>sous forme de lotissements monotones et dépourvus de vie, l’horizon verdoyant de la campagne est remplacé par une lame de béton.</strong> Partout les mêmes matériaux industriels, partout les mêmes isolants chimiques, partout les mêmes formes sorties des magazines d’architecture à la mode.

<div>Combien d’années avant que ces bicoques aux murs ne s’effondrent ? Combien d’années avant que l’eau ne trouve son chemin à travers les toitures plates ? Combien d’années avant que les millions de tonnes de béton déversées dans les quartiers pavillonnaires finissent en gravats et poussières ? L<strong>’architecture, qui devait jadis durer le plus longtemps possible, est devenue un produit d’investissement à obsolescence rapide.</strong> Construire rapporte de l’argent ; détruire et construire à nouveau en rapporte encore plus.

<div><strong>Que faire ?</strong>

</div>
<div>L’association La Table Ronde de l’Architecture veut s’attaquer à la racine du problème : <strong>la formation des architectes</strong>. Cette formation, aujourd’hui défaillante, est la cause de la détérioration de notre cadre de vie et, par conséquent, de la détérioration de la vie elle-même.

</div>
<div>Mais au constat que nous venons de dresser, il existe de nombreux <strong>remèdes</strong>. Face à l’industrie du béton armé, il existe le pan de bois et la maçonnerie de pierre et de briques. Face à la toiture plate, la toiture en pente couverte d’une épaisse couche de tuiles, d’ardoises ou de lauzes. Face à l’isolation chimique, il y a le chanvre, le liège, la terre et la paille. Face au PVC, la menuiserie. Face à l’acier, la charpente. Face au gazon synthétique, l’art du jardin. Nous pourrions multiplier les exemples de ces métiers issus de plusieurs millénaires d’architecture, qui sont aujourd’hui méprisés et abandonnés au profit d’une architecture consumériste, polluante et industrielle. Le charpentier, le maçon, le tailleur de pierre, le couvreur, le menuisier, le briquetier, le chaumier, le forgeron, le chaufournier, le sculpteur et tant d’autres !

<div>Il faut remettre ces connaissances traditionnelles au cœur de la formation des architectes. Voilà la pierre angulaire de notre pédagogie, sur laquelle repose notre projet: <strong>nous voulons réconcilier l’architecte et l’artisan.</strong>

<div><strong>Une école de bâtisseurs</strong>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Cette réconciliation prendra la forme d’une nouvelle école : <strong>la première école d’architecture et d’artisanat d’Europe</strong>. Cette école ne formera pas des architectes au sens académique du terme, mais <strong>des bâtisseurs</strong>. Les étudiants y recevront à la fois :
</div>

<li><strong>des cours théoriques</strong> (dessin, géométrie, construction, histoire et philosophie),
</li>
<li>et <strong>des enseignements pratiques</strong> (maçonnerie, charpenterie, taille de pierre, menuiserie, enduits de chaux et de terre, torchis, céramique, gravure et peinture)
</li>
</ul>

<div>Situés dans <strong>une ferme alsacienne du 17ème</strong> siècle, au cœur du village de <a href="https://maps.app.goo.gl/6dn27PStD1CkZv9U9" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Westhoffen</a> dans le Bas-Rhin, les bâtiments eux-mêmes seront le premier sujet d’étude.

<div><strong>La restauration et la transformation de l’ancien corps de ferme</strong> avec l’aide des étudiants, sous forme de <strong>chantier-écoles</strong>, permettra de mettre les enseignements en pratique. <strong>Les étudiants apprendront tout en édifiant, pierre par pierre, leur école.</strong>

<div><strong> À terme, l’école comprendra :</strong>

<li>plusieurs salles de cours et de dessin,

<li>une vaste bibliothèque,
</li>
<li>des ateliers de taille de pierre, maçonnerie, charpente, menuiserie, céramique, gravure sur pierre et arts décoratifs,

<li>une « maison des étudiants » avec chambres, sanitaires, salon, salle à manger et cuisine,
</li>
<li>un café associatif, ouvert au public, servant de lieu de rencontre entre les étudiants, les artisans et les habitants du village.
</li>

<div>Plus qu’un simple établissement d’enseignement, nous souhaitons <strong>créer un lieu de vie, d’étude et d’entraide</strong>, où se côtoieront des personnes de tous horizons, de tous âges et de toutes cultures, réunies autour d’un même objectif : <strong>l’apprentissage des traditions millénaires d’une architecture belle, durable et profondément humaine.</strong>
