Help Us Build a Picnic Shelter at Jackrabbit

Help us build a Picnic Shelter at the Jackrabbit Mountain Bike and Hiking Trail System (JRTS). 20 years ago, Clay County Communities Revitalization Association (CCCRA) and Southern Appalachian Bicycling Association (SABA) had the vision to enhance the Jackrabbit recreation area and make Clay County a destination for mountain bikers. After their long-term master plan was approved by the USFS, the work began and the picnic shelter is the final item on that plan.

Since 2003, CCCRA and SABA have raised over $1 million for the JRTS – over $650K from grants, fundraising and donations, and over $350K in volunteer labor. There are now over 23 miles of stacked-loop trails (21 miles of shared use and 2 miles of hiking trails), a bike maintenance station and a bike wash station. The Forest Service installed a Comfort Station, grills, and picnic tables.

To celebrate the “Year of the Trail”, and the 20th anniversary of their collaboration, CCCRA & SABA are kicking off a campaign to fund the picnic shelter. The shelter, to be located at the JRTS trailhead – a no-fee area enjoyed by residents and visitors, will serve as a rest spot for bikers and hikers, an outdoor classroom for learning, a venue for church and school outings, deliver shade for families seeking outdoor recreation, and provide protection when the weather turns foul.

The cost to build the shelter to USFS design and standards will be up to $120 thousand. Your donations will serve as seed money which will allow SABA & CCCRA to apply for matching grants and other sources of funding. We ask you to “Help Us Build a Picnic Shelter”.
