<div>I never imagined I’d be writing this. My heart is broken as I share that my beautiful mother, Jan, tragically passed away in a motor vehicle accident while in Jamaica — a place she loved deeply and visited annually for decades. She fought hard, but her injuries were too severe.
</div>

<div>My mom was a bright light and a beautiful soul, full of love and warmth.  We can’t imagine a world without her in it. Now I’m faced with the unimaginable task of bringing her home to Canada so she can rest with the love and dignity she deserves, surrounded by family.

<div>At the same time, my stepdad, Frank, is fighting for his life in the hospital in Jamaica. His injuries are extensive and life-threatening.
</div>
<div>Here’s a breakdown of his current injuries:
</div>
<ul>
<li>Both arms and legs are broken
</li>
<li>Multiple facial fractures
</li>
<li>Swelling in the brain
</li>
<li>Broken ribs, which were putting pressure on his internal organs
</li>
<li>Fluid around his heart (now improving)
</li>
<li>Multiple open wounds and gangrene, which required emergency surgery
</li>
<li>One leg has a broken femur, tibia, and fibula
</li>
<li>Shattered knee, requiring full replacement
</li>
<li>Fractured elbow
</li>
</ul>

<div>We’ve also learned that their travel insurance had expired, and the costs of emergency care, surgeries, and medical transport are overwhelming.

<div><strong>Frank's Medical Flight Update:</strong>
</div>
<div><strong>We’ve now secured an air ambulance to fly Frank out of Kingston. Commercial flights are not an option in his condition.  He is scheduled to depart on Monday at 11 a.m. and will be flown to Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops, BC, where a care team is ready to receive him.</strong>
</div>
<div><strong>The cost of this medical flight alone is $100,000 CAD.</strong>

<div>Update on Frank:
</div>
<div>Frank remains in critical condition, though he is now stabilized. His body has been through immense trauma, and while some progress has been made — like improvements to his lungs and a reduction in pressure from his broken ribs — there is still a long road ahead.
</div>

</div>
<div>He recently underwent emergency surgery to remove gangrene in his arm. His brain appears stable so far, and the fluid around his heart is continuing to improve. A full set of CT scans and MRIs have been completed, and he has been officially cleared for emergency air ambulance transport out of Jamaica.
</div>

</div>
<div>Once in Canada, he will begin the next phase of treatment with a full team of physicians at Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops, who are already briefed on his case and prepared to support his recovery.
</div>

</div>
