<div>Our beautiful son Shaun is three years old and our only child. He was born seemingly healthy, but when he was around nine months old, we began noticing developmental delays. As parents, we knew something wasn't quite right, and so began a long journey of appointments, tests, and referrals.
</div>
<div>Over the past few years, Shaun has been followed by his GP, paediatrician, a neurologist, and most recently a genetics team in Limoges. Along the way, we often felt unheard and were sometimes told that Shaun's delays could simply be due to "laziness." Despite this, we continued to advocate for our son because we knew there was more to his story.
</div>
<div>After countless hospital visits, scans, MRIs, and genetic testing, we finally received an answer. The first round of genetic testing came back negative in 2025, but further investigations eventually revealed that Shaun has an extremely rare genetic condition called ABHD16A. At the time of his diagnosis, only 18 cases had been documented worldwide, making Shaun the 19th known case.
</div>
<div>We have since learned that both of us, Shaun's parents, unknowingly carry this rare genetic variant on our 12th chromosome. Like many families facing a rare disease diagnosis, we had never heard of this condition before.
</div>
<div>The last few weeks have been incredibly difficult as we have tried to process this life-changing news. We know there will be challenges ahead, but we also know that Shaun is a strong, happy little boy who deserves every opportunity to reach his full potential. As his parents, we are determined to stand up for him, fight alongside him, and give him the best quality of life possible.
</div>
<div>Shaun currently attends physiotherapy every week and has done so for the past two years. Following his diagnosis, we will be increasing these sessions to help maintain and improve his mobility for as long as possible. While there is hope that Shaun may walk, we have also been told that there is a significant possibility that he could lose mobility in the future. He also lives with an intellectual disability and has been attending speech and language therapy since January, which we will continue to support. Some children with ABHD16A also develop epilepsy, so this is something that will need to be monitored closely over time.

<div>We are creating this fundraiser to help provide Shaun with the support and resources he will need in the years ahead. The funds raised will help us:

<div>• Move to a more suitable bungalow-style home that can accommodate Shaun's future needs and specialist equipment such as a wheelchair, Motilo, verticaliser, and other mobility aids.
</div>
<div>• Replace our current family vehicle, which is too small to safely transport Shaun and his growing amount of medical equipment.
</div>
<div>• Support the incredible work of Shaun's physiotherapist, Louis Le Bot, and speech and language therapist, Kathleen Neveu. Together with their multidisciplinary team, they are developing a new children's centre in Limoges where children like Shaun will be able to access multiple therapies and specialist services in one place.
</div>

<div>Notre magnifique fils Shaun a trois ans et est notre enfant unique. Il est né en parfaite santé, mais vers l'âge de neuf mois, nous avons commencé à remarquer des retards dans son développement. En tant que parents, nous savions que quelque chose n'allait pas tout à fait, et c'est ainsi qu'a commencé un long parcours fait de rendez-vous médicaux, d'examens et de consultations spécialisées.

<div>Au cours des dernières années, Shaun a été suivi par son médecin traitant, son pédiatre, un neurologue et, plus récemment, par une équipe de génétique à Limoges. Tout au long de ce parcours, nous avons souvent eu le sentiment de ne pas être entendus et l'on nous a parfois dit que les difficultés de Shaun pouvaient simplement être dues à de la « paresse ». Malgré cela, nous avons continué à nous battre pour notre fils, car nous savions qu'il y avait une explication à ses difficultés.

<div>Après d'innombrables séjours à l'hôpital, examens, IRM et tests génétiques, nous avons finalement obtenu une réponse. Une première série de tests génétiques s'est révélée négative en 2025, mais des investigations complémentaires ont finalement permis de diagnostiquer chez Shaun une maladie génétique extrêmement rare appelée ABHD16A. Au moment de son diagnostic, seuls 18 cas avaient été recensés dans le monde, faisant de Shaun le 19e cas connu.
</div>
<div>Nous avons depuis appris que nous sommes tous les deux porteurs de cette variante génétique rare située sur notre 12e chromosome, sans jamais l'avoir su. Comme beaucoup de familles confrontées à une maladie rare, nous n'avions jamais entendu parler de cette pathologie auparavant.
</div>
<div>Ces dernières semaines ont été extrêmement difficiles alors que nous essayions d'assimiler cette nouvelle qui change notre vie. Nous savons que de nombreux défis nous attendent, mais nous savons aussi que Shaun est un petit garçon courageux, heureux et plein de vie qui mérite toutes les chances de réaliser son potentiel. En tant que parents, nous sommes déterminés à nous battre pour lui, à ses côtés, et à lui offrir la meilleure qualité de vie possible.

<div>Depuis deux ans, Shaun bénéficie d'une séance de kinésithérapie chaque semaine. À la suite de son diagnostic, nous allons augmenter la fréquence de ces séances afin de préserver et d'améliorer sa mobilité aussi longtemps que possible. Bien qu'il y ait de l'espoir qu'il puisse marcher, les médecins nous ont également informés qu'il existe un risque important qu'il perde sa mobilité à l'avenir. Shaun vivra également avec un handicap intellectuel. Depuis janvier, il est suivi en orthophonie, un accompagnement que nous poursuivrons. Certains enfants atteints d'ABHD16A développent également une épilepsie ; nous devrons donc surveiller cela attentivement au fil du temps.

<div>Nous créons cette cagnotte afin d'aider Shaun à bénéficier du soutien et des ressources dont il aura besoin dans les années à venir. Les fonds récoltés nous permettront notamment de :

<div>• Déménager dans une maison de plain-pied plus adaptée aux futurs besoins de Shaun et à l'installation de matériel spécialisé tel qu'un fauteuil roulant, un Motilo, un verticalisateur et d'autres aides à la mobilité.
</div>
<div>• Remplacer notre véhicule familial actuel, devenu trop petit pour transporter Shaun ainsi que l'ensemble de son matériel médical en constante augmentation.
</div>
<div>• Soutenir le travail extraordinaire de son kinésithérapeute, Louis Le Bot, et de son orthophoniste, Kathleen Neveu. Avec leur équipe pluridisciplinaire, ils développent actuellement un nouveau centre pour enfants à Limoges, où les enfants ayant des besoins particuliers comme Shaun pourront accéder à plusieurs thérapies et consultations spécialisées au même endroit.
