Help Ugandan Kids Get Shoes

THE NEED: We are raising $2,600 for costs related to shipping 800 pairs of donated shoes for barefooted students who attend an elementary school in Serere Uganda
Serere Primary School is a public elementary and middle school in Eastern Uganda which has 819 students in attendance, the vast majority of whom do not have any shoes. The families of these students survive on subsistence agriculture and lack funds for school fees and other basic needs.
My name is Tori Ongodia and we live as a family in North Bethesda, Maryland. Last year we traveled for a family vacation to a small village in Serere, Uganda where Bella and Andrew's dad (Robert Ongodia) was born and grew up. During their 2 month stay in the village, they attended class in Serere Primary School for a few days, often reading for the other students and playing with them.
Serere Primary is the same school that Bella and Andrew's dad attended as a young boy. They witnessed so many needs for the school and among them, saw kids walking long distances to reach school, work in the garden and play soccer, all without shoes. They wanted to help.
With the collaboration of the kids' elementary school (Ashburton) in Bethesda, MD, Bella started a shoe drive to collect lightly used tennis shoes to donate back to Serere. The campaign expanded beyond the school to include generous donations from neighborhood listservs, including Nextdoor. A big "thanks" to everyone who has contributed to this effort. We have surpassed our goal with more than 850 pairs of used shoes donated to the project and generous donations are still coming in!
Our Fundraising Goal
Any contribution you make will go straight into the project. We need $2,600 to reach our goal.
The $2,600 we hope to earn will pay for:
*$300 - US handling
*$2,000 - Shipping and clearing (from the US to Uganda)
*$150 - Cleaning the shoes (in Uganda)
*$150 - Transporting the shoes to Serere - 5 hour drive, by truck, from Kampala (capital) to Serere
