HI, my name is Neria Lecanda from Philippines currently residing here in Australia.

Recently typhoon Odette devastated my hometown Alegria, Cebu. Alegria is in the south where the smaller towns and provinces where directly in the path of the Typhoon. Roads, infrastructure and lives have been devastated and it will take years to recover. Many lost loved one's and many of those that did survive have had their lives decimated. Now many homeless people live in the street and there is no electricity or shelter and a shortage of food, water, fuel.

Watching the situation and seeing little one's sleeping in the middle of the road is completely heart breaking. The roof of my house disappeared while my mother and two daughters were bunkered down inside. My brother and his family with nine children who live 120m up the road were not so lucky. As the walls of his house collapsed around them he and his young family were completely exposed as they transitioned to my house in complete darkness. Thankfully the walls of my house remained intact and my extended family survived the night with minimal injuries. I was beside myself for 5 days with no communication before I received word here in Australia that my family was safe for now. I just wish my house was big enough to accommodate my neighbours as well, even without a roof my family are blessed.

 

Our main road is still inaccessible because it is severely damaged and it is almost impossible to get relief through. Scooters are the best option but at the moment most are out of fuel and unusable. Some of my neighbours walk 20 km round trip just to buy food and get it back to their families. Now many of them have no money even if there is food available . Fuel is needed so the scooters can ferry essential supplies to the village. People are getting sick and babies are already running out of milk. Our government is doing what it can but is overwhelmed.

 

I want to help my homeless neighbours who have lost not only their homes and belongings but also their source of income and I need your help. I am appealing for your financial support to ensure the villages are in a position to purchase the essentials and then maybe even materials to allow them to start rebuilding.
