The Healing Walls Project (HWP) is an art organization that directly connects to BIPOC communities to create public art while bringing resources, guidance, and healing to BIPOC Artists. The Healing Walls Project is lead by a radical collaboration of BIPOC queer femme artists.
Art is powerful; it transcends through era and culture, and provokes thought. But what kind of history is being preserved when BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, & People of Color) do not have the opportunity to speak? Our history is incomplete when it is told from only one perspective, and healing is incomplete when those most affected by trauma do not have a platform to express their experience.
In the wake of the 2020 uprising in Louisville, Kentucky, where Breonna Taylor’s life was ended tragically through police brutality, healing has been desperately needed. Black artists NEED to be able to speak on their narratives through public art, both in order to heal and to have their stories told, but they have been met with constant resistance and doubt. For years, Black artists and people of color have been excluded, told “no”, and have had little to no access to resources to tell their stories, and this has not yet changed. After the verdict was revealed and we learned that those responsible for her death would face little to no repercussions, our fighting felt empty.
Out of this emptiness and pain emerged a need for hope and change. In art there is healing, but when the artist is stifled and opportunities are reserved for the privileged, how do we heal? For us, the healing is in the process. Black artists have been waiting to speak on something that directly affects them and other people that look like them. They wait to speak on their experience and their challenges, and on their dreams and desires of a new future. We MUST amplify these artists. We MUST give them a platform to speak RIGHT NOW!
The Healing Walls Project (HWP) aims to close the gaps in history by preserving and uplifting the BIPOC narrative through public art while cultivating organic spaces for BIPOC artists. Public art is a form of essential knowledge and its impact is greatest when the art created holds a direct reflection of the community it serves. HWP travels across the United States connecting BIPOC artists and local organizations to create a more equitable and inclusive art community. Now, Healing Walls is ready to launch the first Louisville cycle of murals and we need your help!

With your donation, HWP will create a network of independent artists that can build with one another and amplify each other’s stories through the creation of public art. We will bring workshops to artists and guide them through the process of creating public art, resulting in rotating murals; art that will change and cycle throughout the course of the year. HWP will also come together with BIPOC communities to heal through collective experience. Your donation will go towards funding operations and resources for artists such as wall space, supplies, workshops, artist compensation, and more.
Healing Walls Project focuses heavily on healing and recognizes that BIPOC communities are disproportionately affected by the COVID19 pandemic. We aim to heal both within ourselves and collectively, above all else we plan to do with safety as a top priority.
