Toby's family has hit some rough times lately. Nearly two years ago Toby tore a bicep at work. This should have healed by now, but the surgeon made a mess of things and Toby is still not right. His arm never healed right and the pain from the surgery did not dissipate as planned. HR contacted Toby and explained the benefits changing his current status and taking leave. What HR did not explain is that after an employee is on leave for 6 months, said employee is no longer eligible for insurance coverage. He is getting workers comp for another two months, but is now injured and uninsured.
A few weeks ago his wife Melissa was feeling sick all day. It progressively got worse, so they decided to take her to the E.R.. Melissa stopped breathing as they pulled into the parking lot. The hospital staff got her breathing again and she spent 16 days in the ICU on a ventilator. She was in a medically induced coma for most of this time. There were two procedures done. My impression is that they were minor surgeries. The estimated ICU bill is close to 120,000.00. Melissa has been in a room for 4 days now. Hopefully she will be going home soon. So every passing day this bill increases.
