Help Tobi Graduate from Howard

My name is Tobi Aboaba. I am an international student from Nigeria, about to start my final year (4th year) studying finance at Howard University.

I gained admission into Howard University in 2017 on a merit based scholarship - the capstone scholarship. My total cost of attendance was about $1,200 each year.

Academically, I started off very strongly finishing my 1st year on the Dean’s merit list.

However, at the beginning of my 2nd year I was a victim of sexual assault. Unfortunately, this was not my first experience of sexual assault. I had struggled with my mental health for a while but that was my tipping point.

At the same time my family began to really struggle financially. A situation that has only been aggravated by the Corona Virus Pandemic. My dad owned a furniture store but had to shut it down due to low sales.

My mom has a corporate job. Both their earnings combined spread very thin running a household and seeing 3 children through school.

The effects of the trauma from the assault made it very difficult for me to function. Balancing processing what had happened,  my academic workload and making money to supplement my parents efforts for my allowance was more than I could handle. Consequently, I did not meet my academic requirement and my scholarship was terminated.

I started therapy in the summer after my 2nd year and thankfully that helped me get to a better place mentally. I made up my grades to meet the scholarship requirement and  appealed the decision to rescind my scholarship explaining the circumstances with proper documentation from my therapist, but my appeal was denied.

Through applying to several grants and donations from friends of family, my family and I have been able to pay off most of this year's fees. I am asking for everyone to please help me raise $45,000 which will cover my current $3,795 balance for my 3rd year and the approximately $40,000 cost of attendance for my final year plus the 2.9% GoFundMe transaction fees.

In my time at Howard University, I have dedicated myself to serving the community. I have served as the Vice President for the African Students Association and I am currently a mentor with the International Pals. In these roles I have helped make Howard University more conducive for International students and the African community.

Earlier this summer I was part of a team that advocated for International student consideration in decision making by Howard University, especially regarding the housing crisis. Through the last 2 academic years I have helped organize various professional development events to help students secure internships, community service events in the DC area as well as an Annual Safe Space Event to support victims of sexual violence. I will be extremely grateful to be able to graduate from the University that I have poured a lot into and that has really contributed to shaping who I am today. I am grateful for everyone’s investment in me and will continue to work hard to make the most of it.
