IN 1910, BLACK FARMERS OWNED 15 MILLION ACRES OF FARMLAND. DUE TO DECADES OF SYSTEMIC RACISM, BY THE 1990s, BLACK FARMERS HAD LOST OVER 12 MILLION OF THOSE ACRES. TODAY, BLACK FARMERS OWN LESS THAN ONE PERCENT OF FARMLAND IN THE UNITED STATES. AS A RESULT, BLACK FAMILIES HAVE BEEN DENIED BILLIONS OF DOLLARS OF INTERGENERATIONAL WEALTH. PLEASE SUPPORT THE ONLY BLACK-LED ORGANIZATION DEDICATED TO SAVING BLACK-OWNED LAND AND DEVELOPING COOPERATIVES AS A TOOL FOR SELF HELP AND BUILDING WEALTH.
The loss of farmland experienced by Black farmers is a result of racial terror that targeted black landowners, broken promises made by the federal government, and racist policies that denied Black farmers, landowners and cooperatives access to resources to sustain their land and businesses. Since 1967, the Federation of Southern Cooperatives/Land Assistance Fund has been the largest and oldest Black-led cooperative association that focuses on preventing Black land loss and building cooperatively owned businesses.
In 1910, 218,000 Black farmers owned approximately 15 million acres of land. By the 1992 agricultural census, only 18,000 Black farmers remained and they owned less than three million acres of land. As a result of Black land loss, wealth denied Black Americans exceeds $120 billion. Losing Black wealth means losing our communities as well as our economic independence.

The Federation's goal is to raise $5 million toward its capital campaign. Campaign donations will support their work to:
1. Develop cooperatives in working class and poor communities of color
2. Renovate and expand the Rural Training and Research Center
3. Develop educational programs on cooperative development and Black land ownership, and
4. Provide loans to Black families that are at risk of losing their farmland.
Campaign funds will also go towards the 40 Acres and a Mule Endowment Fund which ensures that the Federation can continue its important work including advocating for better and more equitable land and farm related policies at both the state and local levels.
