CROWDFUNDING

A short arthouse melodrama about two siblings navigating life after immigrating to the UK with a secret slipping between them.

YOU CAN HELP MAKE THIS FILM POSSIBLE!

Gloria’s character is a tribute to our dearest immigrant parents who sold their souls and crossed oceans in hopes of escaping poverty and a shot at a better life. Not just for themselves but for their families back home in their native countries.

As you may be aware, films cost a lot of money to produce and execute. So far we’ve gathered a sum of £1K but if we’re gonna do Gloria’s story justice, we’re gonna need as much help as we can get from you. We’ve got to do this one right!

The film is inspired by Filipino writer/ director (Rhan Bacana’s/ @radynx) mother’s life story, who became a legal British citizen through the hustle. A lot of battles were fought to get such a politically motivated film off the ground but we’re just getting started.

Let’s get this show on the road!!!

SYNOPSIS:

Set during Brexit 2016 in South London, 16-year-old Gloria and her older sibling are taken in by an older empathetic immigrant. Whilst he overworks himself out of survival instincts, Gloria still desperately searches for a rhyme for their hardships. When the reason they’re on the run slips out, the siblings’ strenuous relationship is on the line, and so becomes bearing the fight to make it.

Rhan Bacana - WHY THIS FILM IS SO IMPORTANT:

My mom came into this world with nothing. She was considered the ‘unlucky baby’ being born right after Ferdinand Marcos declared martial law, with soldiers massacring and torturing innocent civilians. Her family had to run and hide for a very long time, leaving everything they had behind. They lost it all. Growing up she’d often remind me of how privileged I am for the basic things I have in life, which I didn’t understand at first. Her school uniform was a rice bag, there was no food to go around for her 10 siblings and she could barely afford slippers. As soon as she hit 16, she made the bravest decision- she hopped on a boat to Kuwait to find work to support her family. Kuwait was rough, she said. Filipinas who made this decision were often met with all kinds of abuse overseas. But after three different Middle Eastern countries, it was either that or go back home to square one. So when her employer took her on as a nanny with them on their holiday to London, she saw it as the perfect opportunity to run away. She found herself in a park that night and to her, London was her last chance at hope. The rest is history…

It finally all made sense. Why she was hard on me growing up, but would never deny me my physiological needs. Because her childhood was stolen from her and she was learning to be a human all from scratch. There is no one in this lifetime I will meet who is as generous, courageous and loving as my mother, Ria. Someone who carries the burdens of the world yet walks around like this life is easy. Survival has never left the forefront of her mind. I gotta break this generational curse. I just want to give her her childhood back.
