<div>We are AIGT (Doctors specialised in international Health Care and Tropical Medicine) working at the Mangochi District Hospital. A 350-bed hospital which provides care for 1,4 million people living in the district. Under Mangochi District Hospital we have 59 health centres and 4 community hospitals. Due to the stop-working orders for all USAID funded organisations and programs the care in Mangochi is highly compromised, we need your help to get some of the essential and important programs running as soon as possible.

<div>Mangochi is a district in Southeastern Malawi with a high HIV prevalence of 10.1% . With a population of 1.4 million this is around 140.000 people. Because the Ministry of Health does not have enough health workers to run all HIV programs, different organisations have stepped in to help. These programs are mostly running through PEPFAR (President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS relief) and are funded through USAID.

<div>The most recent suspension of foreign assistance from Trump, forced USAID to issue a stop worker order for all the organisations that they are funding, this has led to the shutdown of essential programs for HIV/AIDS care, tuberculosis treatment, family planning and malaria control. In Mangochi only this has let to a shutdown of 34 organisations and programs. This is affecting the health care system greatly and is compromising care.

<div>Though it is difficult to already have a good overview of all services that are compromised, the most pressing services at the moment that are inadequate are the identification of new patients with HIV, testing abilities of related infections like Tuberculosis and Crytococcen and community outreach programs.

<div>In Mangochi District hospital we are testing around 2000 patients a week. In this 90 days stop working order this would mean that around 26,000 people would not get tested. Due to this more mothers will transmit HIV to their yet unborn babies which is preventable, and children and adults that are not yet on treatment will get a delayed treatment which will lead to an increased number of deaths.

<div>THIS CAN NOT HAPPEN! We want to start an emergency fund for Mangochi District so we can hire HIV testers and re-start testing as soon as possible.

<div>We also want to start a radio program to give people health education about HIV for those that live in far away communities where there are now no outreach programs going. We will give information how to reduce the transmission and where to receive care and together with the restarting of testing will help with resuming essential care.

<div>Ook willen we een radioprogramma starten om mensen gezondheidsvoorlichting te geven over HIV voor degenen die in verre gemeenschappen wonen waar nu geen outreach-programma's zijn. Hierin worden onderwerpen besproken die de overdracht van HIV kunnen verminderen en samen met het hervatten van testen zullen helpen bij het hervatten van essentiële zorg.
