How do you find a reason to live when you are told that you won’t ever be able to walk?
Serhiy Amelko found his reason in a sport. And now he wants to inspire other people with disabilities in Ukraine to not give up. He needs our help!
Serhiy Amelko endured a spinal injury in 1999 and has been using a wheelchair since then. "When you are helpless and there is no support, it is very difficult to fight depression" but trauma didn’t stop him. He started pursuing new opportunities so his life got meaning. "I tried myself in various sports: powerlifting, table tennis, swimming, but my vocation is marathon running.”
Since 2012 Serhiy has not only been participating in half marathon, marathons and other races, but has been winning awards and prizes for his performance. Two years in a row he had taken the second place among marathon wheelchair racers in Ukraine. He also has been participating and promoting Ukraine in the international competitions but his desire to race is not enough. "Getting up at 4 am for a training before roads get busy, unfortunately, is not enough. The result and performance depend on a racing wheelchair. Now I'm using an old used wheelchair that was donated to me another sportsman from Germany. I have been fixing it a lot because it was not made for my measurements.”
When we, at the Ukrainian Running Club NY, learned about Serhiy and his astonishing desire and grit to pursue the sport he loves, we decided to help him to make his dream a reality. "My dream is MY own TOP END ELIMINATOR OSR sports racing wheelchair.”
Let’s together make Serhiy dream to come true! Please donate, if you want to be part of this act of kindness. As there are no small acts of kindness, there are no small contributions. Remember that with your contribution you are not only helping one person, but you are also helping many other people with disabilities. Because with his grip and persistence, Serhiy is a true inspiration to others to not give up on life!
