Help Tim Boesen fight back from Stroke

Donation protected
Timothy S. Boesen, father of 5, suffered a major stroke, July 27th, 2019 at approx. 8:45am. shortly after he arrived at work. Co-workers noticed something wasn't right, so they called for medical assistance.

An ambulance rushed Tim to Methodist Hospital as it was the closest option. Tim’s twin sister Tami arrived shortly after where doctor informed Tami that Tim had suffered an ischemic stroke caused by a blood clot in the left occipital lobe. Doctors administered treatment; a clot-dissolving drug named TPA to buy time until he could be transferred to another hospital for surgery.

45 minutes later, Tim was transferred to MercyOne Medical Center. By this time 3 of his friends accompanied Tami and waited anxiously to find out what the next step was. Somehow, during the chaos Tami was able to make phone calls to inform their parents, Connie Boesen and Terry Boesen who live in Waterloo, Iowa.

Doctors quickly performed a CT scan and doctors informed us that Tim’s blood clot was worse than they were expecting. The original plan was for doctors at MercyOne to perform a Thrombectomy – this a procedure that plucks stroke causing clots from blood vessels in the brain. Doctors snake a catheter device through blood vessels to grab and remove the blockage. However, if the blood vessels suffer lack of blood flow for too long, the vessels quickly start to dissolve. Doctors explained “it’s like a garden hose that has cracks.” If the clot was successfully removed, then Tim could potentially die from brain hemorrhagic stroke, caused by ruptured blood vessels that cause bleeding in the brain.

Since there were no other options, doctors went ahead and performed the thrombectomy procedure. A few hours later they informed us it was a success and now we wait to see if there is any bleeding to the brain.

Tim was unconscious for the next several days and every moment was a “take three steps forward, two steps back”. His brain started to swell on day 3 and doctors were very concerned. So, they decided to remove the left side of his skull to allow the brain to swell. Blood vessels were holding strong, but the brain had suffered severe damage. While everyone was very concerned of what Tim’s future might look like, his health continued to improve.

A week after the stroke, Tim began to show some major signs that things might get better. He was finally able to move his right-side extremities and answer questions. When he finally began speaking partial sentences, all the poor guy kept asking for, was WATER. Tim wasn’t allowed to have any fluids (other than through an IV) incase he accidently swallowed down the wrong tube (the lungs). The stitches and staples in his head bothered him so much, he wouldn’t leave them alone, so the poor guy had his only good arm tied to the bed for the next six days. Barely able to speak, begging anyone who entered his room to untie him from the bed – it was heart breaking to see, I promise you.

August 14th, Tim was finally transferred to On With Life - brain and stroke injury recovery center located in Ankeny, IA. Stays at these facilities are determined by how many days your insurance will pay for services. Tim is estimated to only be allowed 28 days for in patient care and we are asking for your help to cover expenses.

Tim is a single father of 5… that’s right, he has 5 wonderful children named Roman (13), Lincoln (11), Duncan (9), Bell (9) and Alice (6). It’s worth mentioning that Tim has primary custody of all 5 children so you can imagine how hard this has been, on everyone involved.

Tim will need assistance for a very long time. Well beyond the estimated 28 days he’s allowed to stay at On With Life, so we’re asking for generosity to make this happen. Everyone involved is doing their part to ensure the 5 kids are cared for, along with securing his properties, paying utility bills, mowing the lawn and the list goes on and on (most of you know what all is involved with caring for family).

In-patient care costs are $1,100 PER DAY and we are very unsure when Tim might be able to return to a job. No donation is too small or too large. Gift cards to department stores to support the children’s school clothes/supplies are greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your kindness, generosity and prayers.
