Help this Veteran fight for his life

In April my little brother, Phillip Trahan, started experiencing back and chest pain… initially we all chalked it up to physical stress from his job.  The pain progressively got worse so he quit that job and started working in a less physical position with another company.  His health continued to worsen.  I took him to the ER where they treated him for pneumonia.  Still he continued to decline…

On May 6th we returned to the ER because he was having difficulty breathing… after several test it was determined that he had a pleural effusion, fluid buildup, in his right lung.  They also noted a large mass in his right lung.  The next morning they drained nearly 2 liters of fluid from his lung.  Medical notes also stated they noticed several smaller masses on his ribs, back and glands.  He was sent home three days later with a preliminary diagnosis of Stage 4 cancer.

Without medical insurance, the hospital didn’t even bother to insure he had the services and equipment needed for home care.  He was released to my care.

My brother is a Gulf War vet who is ineligible for VA care.  I’m desperately working to correct this!  But it takes beaurocratic red tape and time!  Medicaid application process takes 6-12 months to process.  This is time he doesn’t have to wait!

I had to rush my brother back to the ER Wednesday morning where he was life-flighted to UTMB Galveston.  He has a mass that is interfering with his lower spinal chord.  He needs surgery to remove this mass for quality of life.

At this point, I’m being told, his condition is stage 4 with palliative care being his only option.  But without insurance, Medicaid or VA healthcare he would have to be registered at the hospital as ‘self pay’. With a minimum $1,000 deposit!

This is money he doesn’t have.  I’ve already completely depleted my savings and retirement account trying to care for him…

Please help this Veteran achieve the best quality of life possible for the remaining time he has left…
