<div>Thiara, a great friend of mine, who is 41-years-old and lives in Malden, is a responsible, hard worker, no non-sense and very easy person to get along with, always smiling and trying to help others. She frequently goes out of her way to make sure people are doing ok and uses her social circle to introduce to each other and helps everybody to better themselves.

<div>She and Leo married recently, in July 2023, and started living a wonderful life of love and companionship. They were building a better future together when she suffered a life-threatening event a few weeks before their first wedding anniversary.

<div>In June 2024, Thiara suffered a traumatic subdural hemorrhage (massive brain bleed). A few weeks later she suffered a second hemorrhage, on the opposite side of the brain. After the bleeding had stabilized she had two cranioplasty surgeries to replace both skull flaps. Everything was stable at this point but the brain started swelling again and she went through a fifth surgery. Thiara is now non-verbal, has significant motor deficits, and requires a wheelchair for mobility.

<div>Due to our well-known underinsured health system, she has MassHealth Limited, which significantly limits any outpatient treatment for physical therapy and speech therapy, as well as locations where the patient can get blood work and pharmacotherapy without exorbitant out-of-pocket costs. Tube feeding for enteral nutrition, diapers, personal hygiene items are among other things that she needs.

<div>Thiara requires ambulance transportation which is not covered by her limited insurance. While her husband is working as much as he can, Thiara requires Leo to be with her at appointments and any home-based care she receives. Her mother and father are here under a limited visa and will need to return to Brazil. Leo will need to hire caregivers as Thiara requires 24/7 assistance. Thiara and Leo have suffered considerable loss of income in the past 7 months.

<div>Ela e Léo se casaram recentemente, em julho de 2023, e começaram a viver uma vida maravilhosa de amor e companheirismo. Eles estavam construindo um futuro melhor juntos quando ela quase perdeu a vida, algumas semanas antes de completarem o primeiro aniversário de casamento.

<div>Em junho de 2024, Thiara sofreu uma hemorragia subdural traumática (hemorragia cerebral bem intensa). Algumas semanas depois ela sofreu uma segunda hemorragia, no lado oposto do cérebro. Depois que o sangramento se estabilizou, ela fez duas cirurgias de cranioplastia para repor as duas calotas que haviam sido retiradas em cada lado do crânio. Tudo estava estável a essa altura, mas o cérebro começou a inchar novamente e ela passou por uma quinta cirurgia. Thiara agora não fala, a coordenaçao motora está bem debilitada e precisa de uma cadeira de rodas para se locomover.

<div>Devido ao notório problema com planos de saúde, que são insuficientes e não cobrem tudo, ela tem apenas o MassHealth Limited, o que limita significativamente qualquer tratamento ambulatorial de fisioterapia e fonoaudiologia, bem como locais onde o paciente pode fazer exames de sangue e farmacoterapia sem custos exorbitantes. Alimentação por sonda, fraldas, itens de higiene pessoal estão entre outras coisas que ela necessita.

<div>Thiara necessita de transporte de ambulância, que não é coberto pelo seu seguro limitado. Léo está trabalhando o máximo que pode, mas Thiara precisa que ele esteja presente nas consultas e em todos os cuidados domiciliares que ela receber. A mãe e o pai dela (D. Lúcia e Seu Benedito) estão aqui mas eventualmente precisarão retornar ao Brasil. Léo precisará contratar cuidadores, pois Thiara precisa de assistência 24 horas por dia, 7 dias por semana. Thiara e Leo sofreram uma perda considerável de renda nos últimos sete meses.
