Help the Villagers along PNG's Ghost Mtn Trail

Donation protected
Last summer, I hiked 150 miles across Papua New Guinea on the Kapa Kapa/Ghost Mountain Trail with my father, James Campbell, a team of Papua New Guineans, and six other trekkers. We were following the jungle route that men of the 32nd Division took, in 1942, on the way to the coastal village of Buna, where they fought the Japanese Imperial Army. In 2006, while researching his book The Ghost Mountain Boys, my dad assembled a small expedition team to retrace the trail for the first time ever. After hearing the stories of his adventures, I dreamed of one day doing the trek, too.

On our 2018 trek, we hiked across jungles and over mountains and through more than a dozen villages, where we were welcomed with kindness and generosity, and treated to dance, song, and food. For the trek, we packed light, but made sure to bring a Frisbee for each village. A disc, we found, broke down barriers and cemented quick friendships. Along the way, we noticed that many children and adults suffered from skin infections, burns, and other treatable ailments. In Papua New Guinea, in the rural villages, where 80 percent of the population lives, people are desperate for basic healthcare. Most villages don't have health clinics, and those that do often lack trained professionals and basic medicines.

Upon returning home, we began researching ways to help provide the people along the trail with basic medications. With the help of the Papua New Guinea Tribal Foundation, a non-religious humanitarian charity, which has been operating on the island for a decade, we will purchase C.U.R.E Kits. C.U.R.E Kits are pre-packaged kits of basic but critical medical supplies that have the potential to change the lives of the people along the trail. These kits include items such as IV supplies, dressings, syringes and needles, laceration kits, and skin and oral supplies (for the full list see https://projectcure.org/sites/default/files/2019-07/c.u.r.e._kit_packing_list.pdf ). In May and July of 2020, we will hike in to villages along the trail and hand-deliver the kits, as well as books and Frisbees.

We would like your help. Our $5,000 donation goal will pay for C.U.R.E. Kits, books for all ages, Frisbees, and transport.

Any donation will go directly to improving the lives of the people of Papua New Guinea. Thank you!
