Help The U School Visit the NMAAHC

This year at The U School, an Innovation Network school in the School District of Philadelphia, we are exploring our Humanities course through an African-American lens. We were fortunate enough to get tickets for 40 of our students to visit the National Museum of African-American History and Culture on October 23. We plan to give students 4 hours to explore the museum, to take a bus tour to view major DC sites and monuments, and to end our day with a visit to Union Station.
In our Humanities course this year (for students in grades 9-12), we are approaching African-American history through a thematic lens, combining historical content with literature and student interest to create a rich and rigorous learning experience. We look forward to analyzing African textile traditions and their translation to America, reading "The Hate U Give" by Angie Thomas, exploring philosophies of resistance throughout history, writing monologues from a feminist lens, mapping Black history in Philadelphia, and creating mythical Afrofuturist narratives. Here is a brief preview of our units for the school year:
In our first unit this year, our students wrote "This is My Body" poems, inspired by the opera "We Shall Not Be Moved" and lyrics by Marc Bamuthi Joseph. The resulting poems show the quality of work that you should expect our students to produce throughout this school year.
We have already taken a group of 30 students to see "We Shall Not Be Moved", and look forward to many more trips and experiences throughout the year within Philly, including the Free Library and Eastern State Penitentiary. We also have partnerships this year with Philly Young Playwrights and the Mural Arts Program, in order to enhance and deepen student learning.
As with all of our trips, we will offer this trip to all students in our school, grades 9-12. The first 40 students to turn in their slips and money will be added to the list, with additional students added to a waiting list. We will not exclude any students do to inability to pay, and your donation will help support all of our students with this opportunity.
The tickets to the museum are free - but we need to pay for a charter bus to DC. Currently, the School District does not provide funding for schools to take trips, and our individual school budget does not allow us to pay for the cost of the bus. If we were to place the entirety of the cost on students, we would have to charge each student more than $40 for the bus alone, not including meals. This cost would be prohibitive for the vast majority of our students. Once we have covered the cost of our bus, additional funds will be put towards student meals.
