Samson Family Hurricane Ian Relief Fund

Donation protected
Hello, all. My name is Ashlyn Shawver (from Houston, TX) and I’ve created this fund for my aunt, uncle, and cousin who’ve survived Hurricane Ian, which decimated their home and business on Sanibel Island.

They’ve essentially lost everything and have lost their restaurant on island- their source of income. Donations will help to clothe, feed, and shelter them as they take steps to rebuild their lives.

Meet the Samson Family of Sanibel Island- Jeff, Kathy, and Malia. They own Spoondrift Island Bowls, have been involved and well-loved Sanibel residents for years, and are some of the most generous and wonderful people you’ll ever meet. I am grateful to have them as family.

They were able to evacuate before Hurricane Ian made landfall on Sanibel Island, but they have lost everything from their home and business, and they need our help to rebuild their lives. Please donate what you can to help them get back on their feet after this horrific event. Every cent counts and is wholeheartedly appreciated.

The destruction on Sanibel is being described as “biblical.” First responders called it a “war zone.” One report stated the aftermath “has an armageddon-like feel to it.” The island is forever changed.

City officials have advised that residents should seek immediate housing off island and have been informed that the island will not be inhabitable until “well into 2023.” Water, electricity, and sewer will not be functioning for several months.

Many year-round Sanibel residents and business owners, like my family, rely heavily on the tourist season for income. Their entire livelihood depends on people vacationing on the island and visiting their businesses. The sad reality is that people won’t be vacationing on Sanibel for a very long time. This will leave many people with no source of income- my family included.

On top of the lack of income lies the incredible devastation of their home and business. The carnage brought by Hurricane Ian left no Sanibelian untouched. Every single structure incurred damage. Buildings and homes were left in piles of debris. Some structures have been completely swept away, leaving nothing behind but sand. Entire inventories floated out of businesses. All this to say nothing of the water damage created by the 20+ foot storm surge.

My heart goes out to everyone impacted by Hurricane Ian - especially those who have lost loved ones.

Thank you again to everyone who has donated, offered love and support, volunteered, and continues to rally for the people of SW Florida.
