Help the Mathis Family Beat Cancer

Donation protected
As friends of the Mathis family, we wanted to share what they are going through and ask for your help.

Lane and Janet are two exceedingly generous people. They have been married for an incredible 38 years, have two beautiful children (Layla and Monroe) and have been small business owners in Helena, Montana for the past 37 years. Like many businesses around the country, the Mathis’ and their hair salon Futura Lane, INC., have felt the economic impact of the current global situation. While they have now been able to safely reopen to greet us with a smile everyday, they now face an even greater challenge.

Just two days after Memorial Day, we learned that Lane was diagnosed with advanced throat cancer, specifically Invasive Squamous Cell Carcinoma. Thankfully, a recent scan has shown that the cancer has not spread to other parts of his body. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he wasn’t able to get in earlier this year with his doctor for a regular appointment to check on pain and irritation that he felt was very strange. It was the blessing of ENT Dr. Dixon who found the tumor, urging him to see a specialist right away. Now that he knows what he is fighting against, Lane is starting aggressive chemotherapy treatment next week.

Personally, we have known Lane and Janet for at least the last 25 to 40 years between the two of us! Every single time we see them, they are both lovely, upbeat, and have overwhelmingly positive attitudes about everything that is going on in their lives and ours. Over the years, Lane has been a regular volunteer with Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks as a hunter and bowhunter safety instructor to children. He loves to bow hunt and is always willing to share a taste of the sausage or jerky he makes from each year’s successful hunt to restock the freezer. Lane is also known for his artistic side. Many of you have seen his wood working talent and creations in their salon. Every cabinet, client station and even the window trim was built and finished by Lane.

Those of us who have been privileged to call Lane a friend over the years also know he is an outlandishly colorful and hilarious man who lives life to its fullest. Lane and Janet have always been supporters of local charities, donating every month to multiple organizations over the years. A few of those include the Friendship Center, the Angel Fund, the Helena Food Share, Lewis & Clark Humane Society, Shoot for the Cure, and St. Peter’s Cancer Center.

We want to do everything we possibly can for these two caring and amazing people. They have never hesitated to go above and beyond for anyone they meet. Whether you know them through charity work, hobbies or their warm friendship, we all want to see Lane beat this and continue to crack jokes with us like he always does. We understand it is an unprecedented and difficult time we live in right now and is tough to imagine having to go through anything like what Lane and Janet are facing right now. We greatly appreciate anything you feel you can contribute to help the Mathis family offset medical treatment because every single bit counts.
