Somewhere along the line, I got the crazy notion that you got married in your mid-20s, waited a year, and started a family. The only part of that story we managed to get right was waiting a year to try and start a family.
Rich and I were married in 2011 and began the journey to parenthood in 2012. After almost a year of trying, we decided to get medical help. I was diagnosed with PCOS and prescribed medicine to help get everything back on track. Eight months later, we had the greatest surprise, two pink lines. We’d beat infertility…until a week and a half later. We thought it would only be a matter of time before it happened again, so we continued to try on our own for another year and a half before we turned to a fertility specialist for help. I know, why did we wait so long?
The next two years were a roller coaster of hope, disappointment, and apathy. We went through additional testing, several medicated cycles, three IUIs, and two more miscarriages (that we know of). In late 2017, we heard of a different fertility clinic that was giving away a free cycle of IVF at a seminar. We figured we’d give it a shot. Clearly, as I’m posting this on GoFundMe, we did NOT win a free cycle (lol). But we did get something out of the seminar. After five and a half years of this journey, I thought I knew a fair amount about infertility from my own experiences and those of fellow infertility fighters that I’ve met along the way, but I was wrong. The doctor, known for tackling difficult cases, spoke about tests and causes of recurrent pregnancy loss that I’d never heard of. And it gave me hope. We took advantage of the free consultation and he laid out his plan. Within 4 months, we finally had an answer. I tested positive for Antiphospholipid Syndrome (APS), a rare disorder in which the immune system mistakenly attacks normal proteins in the blood. Despite being almost 36 years old, our doctor thinks we are good candidates for Micro IVF. We know there will be additional medicine needed to increase the chances for successful implantation and, God willing, the first trimester of the pregnancy.
Our IVF cycle is scheduled at the end of March, almost 6 years after we started our journey to parenthood. The cycle is $9,200 plus anesthesia and medicine. Because we’re doing a micro cycle, the medicine should be lower than a conventional cycle, but I will require additional medicine because of the APS, so we have estimated medicine costs at $5,000 for now until we know specifically from the doctor what my protocol will be. We are so grateful for any support you can give and appreciate if you can help us share our story.
