Losing Everything A toxic mold exposure in July 2018 forced the LeVier family to walk away from their home and everything in it. Losing their worldly possessions was a painful and tragic experience but, far worse, it robbed them of their health. Jordyn, her daughters, Lydia and Lexi, and their dog, Haddie, have all suffered innumerable health challenges.
Facing the Health Challenges From respiratory failure to rashes, every body system was affected. The family has been referred to over 20 different specialists to manage their medical care. With only 50% lung function and requiring 6 L/min of continuous supplemental oxygen, doctors explained the severity of Jordyn’s condition. Due to her rapid rate of decline, she was told that she would eventually need a double lung transplant without proper medical intervention. She was referred to world-renowned National Jewish Health in Denver, Colorado. There, Jordyn’s diagnosis and prognosis were made clear. She learned that she had developed a condition known as hypersensitivity pneumonitis from the mold exposure. Walking away from their water damaged apartment home had been a life-saving decision, protecting the family from ongoing exposure to toxic mold and dust.
Moving On Though the healing journey ahead will be a long and difficult process, the family’s health has been slowly improving. Jordyn is currently out of respiratory failure and no longer requires supplemental oxygen. Lydia and Lexi’s overall health continues to improve day by day. And, though Haddie is doing better, she is in need of a surgery which had to be postponed due to finances. Jordyn is channeling perseverance and hope while focusing on continued healing for herself and her family.
The Financial Burden
Loss of Income Unfortunately, health challenges have prevented Jordyn, a yoga instructor and wellness coach, from working adding a major financial hurdle for the family. Though Bret, a Health and Physical Education teacher and baseball coach, has worked hard to support his family during this difficult time, the mountains of debt continue to rise.
Replacing A Home and Everything In It The landlord refused to properly replace and remediate the LeVier’s possessions and the renter’s insurance policy covered only a trivial amount on personal property claims relating to mold damage. With declining health and air tests confirming toxic mold spore counts of 16,000 - 160,000 per cubic meter throughout the home, the family was forced to leave everything behind and start over.
Medical Expenses Twelve months of past medical bills combined with ongoing and future medical expenses have left this family in financial ruins. Copays, co-insurances, and deductibles. Emergency room visits, hospitalization, prescriptions, and medical equipment. Veterinarian expenses. Medical expenses not covered by insurance including complementary treatments as well as out of network medical care with top specialists at Cedars-Sinai, UCLA, UCSF, and National Jewish Health. Travel expenses to specialists throughout Orange County and Los Angeles as well as airfare, hotels, and other related costs to see specialists in San Francisco and Denver. And the list goes on.

We didn’t know that our home was water damaged. We didn’t know that toxic mold was lurking behind our walls and silently taking over our home. We didn’t know that our home was making us sick. We didn’t know until it was too late. We didn’t know until it nearly took my life.
Please share this message. Tell your family, friends, neighbors. Everyone you know. Take water leaks seriously. Mold begins to grow on water damaged surfaces within 24-48 hours. Mold is dangerous! Please don’t let what happened to us happen to you or someone you love!
