Help the Ferlaak Family

Our two year-old nephew Aric Ferlaak is one of 300 children in the world diagnosed with Embryonal Tumor with Multilayered Rosettes, C19MC altered. This pediatric tumor is the subject of very little research. Over the past 16 months, Aric has endured three brain surgeries, multiple rounds of aggressive chemotherapy, and a bone marrow transplant. These measures had little effect on the tumor growth. After six weeks of daily proton therapy this spring an MRI showed a dead tumor and the family finally had some hope. A few weeks ago, Aric’s headaches and other symptoms returned. An MRI revealed the tumor was twice the size and more aggressive. Tumors have spread to his spine. The family now faces the unimaginable: They will lose their youngest son in the next few months.
Tom is our youngest brother—the baby of our family. He and his wife Jessica have two other children: Adrien who is 10 and Allister who is 6. Adrien and Allister are loving brothers and they have been amazing as their baby brother and parents have spent hundreds of nights and days in the hospital and thousands of miles on the road, most recently six weeks of daily 200-mile round-trips to Rochester.
Tom and Jessica have been the model of strength through this journey. They have been doing everything possible for Aric and have also helped Children’s Cancer Research Fund raise money for cancer research by sharing their story and being one of the featured families on KS95 for Kids radiothon. They are always thinking about others and how to help others. They have never asked for anything.
We need to come together to help now. They have endured more than any family should have to handle. Many people have asked what they can do to contribute. The biggest gift we can give them is to ease their worries about money. Gifts will help with household and medical expenses to allow the family to care for Aric and help Adrien and Allister cope with something no sibling should have to face. Jessica is not working at all so she and Tom can give Aric the best care possible and spend what remaining time they can with him.
