When I was a student learning journalism at City College of San Francisco, Jeffrey was a student representative on the college board. We used to just be acquaintances, until we bonded over Star Trek and entertained each other with our favorite Trek quotes ("the line must be drawn, here!") on a long bus ride up to a protest in Sacramento. That was nearly ten years ago. When he left City College and I moved on to become a professional journalist, we stayed friends.
