After years of wearing blankets for warmth, the sewers backing up, and feeling as though no one cared because they are native, my students finally have a new high school.
My students have never had a high school library!
The Bug-O-Nay-Ge-Shig "library" consisted of one bookshelf for the entire seventh through twelfth grades. Now, the library has its own "groupies" and students stop by often asking if we have any new books. While they are interested in the normal teen-age books, like "Walking Dead" graphic novels, they often ask for books about their heritage. They are interested in the history of their tribes and want to learn about the unique skills and cultures each possess.
Our school is the only school in Minnesota with an immersive program for the Ojibwe culture. But the school actually accepts students from many different tribes. The families who send their children here want them to learn the traditional ways and learn the traditional stories and beliefs. I need your help to do that.
Your gifts will help make the old ways known to a new generation!
Our students need to be able to research their heritage, learn what their ancestors knew and lived, and see that their ways are still present in our world. Every child has their own path. By offering a wide choice of books, we can help each student make the connections needed to understand and value new ways to make their heritage a part of their futures.
We are also asking people to purchase specific books , but your financial donations will allow us to purchase books and supplies down the road, once we have a better sense of our needs in the new space.
