Help the children of Kibera

In March, I have the privilege with my son Rea, to fly to East Africa, where we will climb Mount Kilimanjaro. We are going on behalf of the Kilimanjaro Initiative. The KI Initiative, USA, and specifically the climb that we are doing, is to promote self empowerment in young leaders in underserved communities.

The main objective of KI USA is to encourage young people to have self-belief and to assist in providing opportunities that will enable them to take on a construction role in their communities.

KI USA's signature event is the annual ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain on the African continent and the tallest free-standing mountain in the world. The climb exemplifies how sport can be used as a tool towards the development of a person and/or community. The mountain reminds participants that to overcome difficulty they must understand their environment, unite as a team, and persevere.

Rea and I are starting to train today. We are determined to succeed, and excited to be a part of this incredible organization.

While we are there, we are also going to visit a school called the Red Rose school in Kibera, the second largest urban slum in Africa. The Redrose school is affiliated with East Side middle school in Manhattan. This is the sister school where our friend Jakob attends, who is also doing the climb with us as is his father.

With your help, we are hoping to raise money for these students and families, for whatever school supplies they need, or tuition requirements they can't meet. Sadly, the Red Rose school does not qualify for any government funding, and relies solely on donations.
