Help the Brussels Transport Driver!!

On June 19, 2020 a Brussels Transport driver was involved in a fatal accident involving a protester at Sofina Foods in Burlington, ON. The Halton Regional Police have charged the driver with careless driving causing death, which if convicted can carry fines of $2,000-50,000 and a jail term up to 2 years.

The driver's name is being kept anonymous in order to protect him and his family. He has already been the focus of threats by animal activist groups on social media should they determine his identity.  Brussels Transport is raising the money on his behalf to continue to protect that anonymity. He needs our help to cover the big costs of fighting this. All money raised will go towards covering his legal fees in fighting this unacceptable charge, as well as tending to his mental health needs.

This charge is not acceptable to the driver, other drivers in the industry or the agricultural community as a whole. The driver was just doing his job to help feed people around the world, delivering pigs to slaughter. He shouldn't be held responsible for activists unlawfully swarming his truck. Activists that don't respect the blind spots of heavy equipment. Activists that verbally harass drivers in the workplace. Activists that give unknown liquids to the pigs. All of these activities are carried on while Halton Police watch and fail to act.

Please consider talking to your local MPP about this issue. The activist problem has gone on far too long in front of Sofina Foods and these tactics are spreading to other locations. Drivers get swarmed by activists in their blind spots and endure constant harassment in the workplace just to deliver the food that you eat. Nobody should have to endure harassment in their workplace, yet the Halton Police refuse to enforce existing laws, including the following sections of the Criminal Code of Canada:
- Interfering with transportation facilities (Section 248)
- Uttering threats (Section 264.1)
- Intimidation by blocking or obstructing a highway (Section 423 (1)(g))
- Committing mischief (Section 430)
Bill 156, the Security from Trespass and Protecting Food Safety Act, should help aid this issue, but only if it's enforced properly by the police.
