Help save the Albuquerque Press Club and The Whittlesey House!

Friends and Members, as many of you know, the COVID-19 pandemic has hit many small businesses in our state and the Albuquerque Press Club is no exception. We empathize with every small business going through similar struggles.  This year has been hard on all of us, especially social clubs.

See our story on KRQE News 13 here:

Historical Building and Social Club in Jeopardy

We are trying to raise $40,000 between April and November to ensure the future of the club and our historic 117 year old building.

Why are we asking for your help?

The  club has not been allowed to open in any capacity for over a year and it has taken a serious financial toll on the organization.

While our members have been supportive with renewals and donations, which we sincerely appreciate, we simply are not bringing in enough income. We have explored all the options available to us through the various stimulus packages and unfortunately, we have not qualified for any of the programs.

As such, we have been careful with our spending to ensure we can meet our obligations. Our current projections (assuming no emergencies) put us in a precarious position come November 2021. Simply put, if we cannot open, we are going to run out of money.

Every dollar of profit the Press Club makes goes into maintaining our historic building. Without enough income to cover fixed costs, we cannot do that.

Where does this money go?

We have fixed costs of roughly $1800 per month for utilities, dues and subscriptions, insurance, various licensing and professional fees.

In November, we will incur a fixed cost of nearly $11,000 for our insurance premium, which covers the cost of replacing the building in the event of a disaster. Additionally, a bill of $5500 for property taxes will be due in December.

These fixed costs, which we can budget for, do not cover variances and unexpected bills.

We need funds for much needed repair and maintenance for the clubhouse, the historic Whittlesey House. While we have spent the money needed on the critical issues, there are other much needed repairs to be made; specifically around our plumbing system and building foundation.

About the Albuquerque Press Club:

We are a private club, with a mission to support journalism and freedom of speech.  Our membership is a disparate community of individuals with this common purpose. We believe that service to this community enriches us all in many ways.

We offer a non-threatening social venue, providing opportunities to our members as varied as our membership. One might find card or table games, discussion groups, music groups, and professional development groups operating on their own within our organization. We offer opportunities to produce or participate in a wide variety of social activities.
