My name is Douglas Lewis, but everybody knows me as ‘Tedy.’ I’m an 18-year-old first-generation student from Trelew, Chubut, Patagonia, Argentina. I am very close to realizing my dream of studying abroad, and I need your help to start my education. Will you help me?
THE UNIVERSITY
Last year, I got into one of the most competitive universities in the United States, Minerva Schools at KGI. With a 1,2% acceptance rate, this innovative college becomes the most selective one in America.
Based in San Francisco, CA, Minerva's global rotation program allows students to live in seven different world cities throughout the four years: San Francisco, Taipei, Seoul, Hyderabad, Berlin, Buenos Aires, and London. Moreover, its rigorous curriculum teaches students the necessary skills to become leaders ready to make an impact in their areas.
THE PROBLEM
I have been very fortunate to be awarded a ≈90% scholarship, which is USD 29.000 out of the total cost of USD 32.950. This leaves a gap of USD 3.950, which doesn’t include flights, insurance costs, or visa fees.
Unfortunately, economic barriers don’t allow me to fulfill this dream. The sum above is more than my family’s annual income. Argentina’s current financial crisis makes it even harder since the dollar exchange rate has rocketed, and the government doesn’t allow people to purchase more than USD 200 per month.
WHO AM I?
I come from a very humble and hard-working family. Neither of my parents had the opportunity to go to college. Still, they’ve always prioritized their children’s education, and that’s why I want to honor them by pursuing my dream career and achieving my goals.
During my high school years, I excelled at the agricultural school of “Bryn Gwyn,” located in the town of Gaiman. My love for doing research and the Natural Sciences allowed me to travel the country representing my school and my province, competing and winning national Science Olympiads and Science Fairs.
In addition to my school performance, I have always tried to contribute to the local community. When I was 14, I joined a Welsh language class and started promoting its use in Patagonia, a former Welsh colony. This allowed me to win a scholarship to travel to Wales for eight months last year and perfect my language skills. Currently, I teach Welsh to children in my zone and contribute to many social events.
In my free time, I enjoy playing the guitar and being surrounded by nature.
One day, I want to become a scientist and hopefully contribute to society with my research.

El año pasado, fui aceptado a la prestigiosa universidad de “Minerva Schools at KGI”, situada en San Francisco, California, Estados Unidos. Con una tasa de aceptación del 1,2%, Minerva es la universidad más dificil para entrar en EEUU. Gracias su programa de “rotación global”, los estudiantes estudian en 7 ciudades del mundo durante los 4 años de la carrera: San Francisco, Taipei, Seúl, Hyderabad, Berlín, Buenos Aires y Londres. Además, su riguroso plan de estudios le da las herramientas a los estudiantes para convertirse en los próximos líderes del futuro.
EL PROBLEMA
Fui afortunado de recibir una beca de aproximadamente el 90%, lo que es USD$29.000 de USD$32.950. Esto me deja una diferencia de USD$3.950, sin incluir otros costos como pasajes, seguro médico y gastos de visado.
Desafortunadamente, mi situación económica se hace una gran barrera a la hora de cumplir este sueño. El costo a pagar es más de lo que ganan mi padres en un año, y la situación en nuestro país lo hace más dificil ya que el precio del dólar se ha disparado rotundamente y el gobierno no permite adquirir más de 200 dólares mensuales.
¿QUIÉN SOY?
Desde muy pequeño siempre me destaqué como un chico curioso y entusiasmado, buscando mi lugar en el mundo e intentando aportar mi granito de arena cada día.
Durante mis estudios secundarios, tuve un excelente desempeño como Abanderado de la escuela agrotécnica “Bryn Gwyn”, de la localidad de Gaiman, lo que me permitió viajar por el país representando a mi escuela y mi provincia compitiendo en Olimpíadas y Ferias de Ciencias.
Además de mi trabajo en la escuela, siempre he intentado de contribuir en mi comunidad. Cuando tenía 14 años, comencé a aprender galés y a participar activamente para fomentar el uso del galés en la Patagonia Chubutense, ex-colonia galesa. Esto me permitió ganar una beca con la que viajé por 8 meses a Gales para perfeccionar el idioma. Hoy por hoy, soy profesor en clases para niños y ayudo en muchos eventos sociales.
En el futuro, me gustaría ser científico y contribuir a la sociedad con mis investigaciones.
