<div><strong>Teagan, our 19 year old daughter, collapsed at home and went into cardiac arrest on May 4th.</strong> I performed CPR while her father called 911. Thankfully, the paramedics arrived quickly. She was taken to our local hospital where she continued struggling to breathe. The next day, she was flown to MedStar Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC, where she was admitted to the CVICU (cardiovascular intensive care unit). Teagan had a severe infection in her heart that had spread to her lungs and blood. Her tricuspid valve was damaged because of the infection. On May 8th, she underwent open-heart surgery to replace the valve. Her heart and lungs weren't strong enough after surgery, and she was placed on ECMO. This allowed time for her body to heal. A pacemaker was also placed due to right-sided heart failure. Over the next few weeks, Teagan went through multiple procedures/surgeries, blood tests multiple times a day, daily chest x-rays, etc. She briefly left the CVICU and moved to a step-down unit. Unfortunately, that was short-lived. They had to call the rapid response team for her because she was in respiratory distress. She moved back to the CVICU where a chest tube was placed to drain the excessive fluid around her lungs. She eventually moved back to the step-down unit where she has remained. As of today, Teagan has been in the hospital for 48 days. I have been with her almost every day. The days I'm not here, her father is. She hasn't spent a single night (or day) alone. <strong>This has had a significant financial impact on our family. And the medical bills will start pouring in soon.</strong> I have had a lot of people ask what they can do to help. We appreciate anything you can do to contribute. The plan is for Teagan to come home this week. She will need follow-up care as well as physical and occupational therapy.
