My name is Juliana Paz and I am helping raise funds for my aunt Tania Cordova, who was detained by ICE on April 15, 2026, in Maryland, on her way to buy plants for her home garden. She was detained in Maryland for 72 hours and then transferred to an ICE detention center in Louisiana, where she is currently at. My aunt is here in the United States because she was granted Withholding of Removal in 2015 to protect her in the U.S. from the dangers she faces as a transgender woman in our country of origin, Mexico. Since being granted Withholding of Removal, my aunt has lived under ICE supervision and has fully complied with every condition imposed on her. She has attended check-ins, followed directives, and has never absconded, never missed hearings, and has remained in consistent communication with the government. She has a pending U-Visa application and a Habeas Corpus petition currently before the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Louisiana. My aunt was also a victim of labor trafficking in the U.S. and is eligible for and intends to apply for a T-Visa. For almost 40 years, she has established deep roots and significant community ties in the United States. She lived here, in Chicago, where most of our family lives until she moved a few years ago to Washington D.C. for a job opportunity, working with transgender youth. She is now a Community Health Worker for a non-profit in Baltimore, where she lives and has a mortgage on a home. She is also a recognized spiritual leader respected by many. As a transgender woman, my aunt faces heightened physical and psychological risks in detention, and she also fears deportation to Guatemala or any other country due to the risk of persecution she faces as a transgender woman. We have no family in Guatemala or any of the other possible countries she is threatened to be deported to. Her family, we are all here in Chicago, and the thought of her being deported to Guatemala or any other country is very unnerving for us as her family and very perilous for her.

We are raising funds to help my aunt with all the costs that come with being detained. We are raising funds to reopen her Withholding of Removal petition from 2015 with the immigration court here in Chicago (cost $1,065), to petition before USCIS for the T-Visa (cost $1,100), and for the legal virtual visits and reports as well as the legal representation before immigration court. We are also raising funds to help pay for my aunt’s personal needs since she lives alone and now that she is detained has no source of income. These personal needs include helping pay for her mortgage, insurances, her bills—water, electric, gas, etc., and possibly a small project that will allow her to add a wall to separate the 1st floor of her house from the 2nd floor so that she might rent out the second floor for additional income that she will need to help her pay for everything else.

It has not been easy for my aunt to be detained. She has met other LGBTQ detainees that are also trapped in a similar situation as she is. My aunt has reported the lack of mail, flaws in the phone system (I have not heard from her since she tried calling me on Mother’s Day), and she mentions that all LGBTQ detainees are put in lockdown away from the general population for 20 hours a day; an act that creates psychological torture. Nonetheless, my aunt is strategizing and planning to use this time as a detainee to help make visible how people like her with a Withholding of Removal suffer in these detention centers. With your help of any amount, you will help us ensure my aunt continues to live a life of dignity under these circumstances. Any amount will help to keep her afloat. Thank you.

Gracias.
