Syrian family of five in desperate need of our help!
In 2012, Mohamed, his wife and three daughters fled Syria. After living in Egypt for three years they finally received their sponsorship by the International Rescue Committee (IRC) and in September 2016 relocated to Atlanta to begin their new life.
With their funds from the IRC running out and Mohamed unable to secure employment he reached out to me, Diane Eamon.
Through my connections I was able to set up an interview for Mohamed with a small company in Vancouver, Washington. He was offered the job and is relocating from Atlanta to Vancouver with his family in August 2017.
Urgent financial support needed. Their limited funds from the IRC have run out and they are only bringing the essentials for their move. My family has provided some financial support but they will need help buying a car, home furnishings, paying for rent/utilities and food.
I cannot emphasize this enough - they are moving here with next to nothing. They have no family nearby and no one to turn to.
Funds raised will be used for:
1. Car, insurance & gas
2. Rent & utilities
3. Food
4. Home furnishings and other basic needs
The family is hoping this will be the start of a good life here in the Pacific Northwest and an end to the sense of displacement and instability that has weighed on them over the past five years.

How I know the family: I met Mohamed and his family in Cairo, Egypt while visiting my son in the spring of 2016. My son was studying Arabic there and he volunteered to tutor Mohamed’s daughters in English. I was invited into their home during one of the tutoring sessions and the family's plight resonated with me. Once they were in the US, I wanted to help. I spoke with Mohamed weekly to answer any questions and/or concerns they might have, give advice and be a friend to him and his family.
The family's background: In Syria, Mohamed was a small business owner and computer programmer. His wife raised their three daughters currently ages 21, 17, and 10. In 2012, as the Syrian uprising became increasingly violent and made it’s way to the streets of the capital, it became unsafe for the family to remain in Damascus.
They fled to Cairo, Egypt and after three years they were granted asylum in Atlanta, Georgia. The IRC provided the family with a furnished apartment and six months financial and community support. However, Mohamed was not able to secure employment and worried about being able to provide for his family. He found that his computer programming credentials from Syria were no longer up to date, rendering him unable to find a job in his field. He struggled to find any employment. His most recent job was as a dishwasher, which ended this past May.
Now that he has a job in Vancouver, I'm hoping to raise $15,000 to go toward a reliable car, rent, food and basic home furnishings.
