With a heavy heart I am sad to say that my maternal family lost a loved one on Sunday. My grandmother, Maria, had been a Covid patient at a hospital in El Paso, TX since 11/09/2020. Throughout the two weeks she had been pleading for our family to get her out of the hands of the people who had been assigned to take "care" of her, reporting that the nurses were being mean to her. With majority of the family being in North Carolina, there wasn't much we could do besides request certain staff off of her case. She had been placed on oxygen support and was RESTRAINED by her arms because she supposedly had become agitated to the point of trying to remove her oxygen mask......During a recorded FaceTime call with her earlier in the week you can see how uncomfortable these restraints were making her....mind you during this entire hour long call a nurse did not check on her ONCE.....On Sunday her oxygen mask somehow was displaced and sent her into code blue......meaning her mask was off long enough that she was completely deprived of oxygen and her heart was stopping. The nurse that was on duty for her at the time was not the one who found her....another nurse that happened to be walking by found her machine going off and called for help. They tried resuscitating her 4 times before her heart just didn't want to keep fighting....

Later Sunday night when the family was all together trying to figure out funeral arrangements, one of my aunts called the front desk of the hospital to confirm what the doctors would be putting on the death certificate. A nurse that had been regularly communicating with our family answered the phone call and answer with "COVID". You could hear in her voice that she did not agree with what was just said and she proceeded to ask my aunt "But what do you think happened...." my aunt replied by saying that she did not think COVID was the reason and that she thought it was due to neglect. The nurse paused and said "you did not hear this from me, but you are 100% correct." She asked my aunt for her number and called her on blocked caller ID to give my family more details on what she thought we should do. She advised us that we should look into getting a private lawyer because "It was not my grandmother's time to go".  She told us that my grandmother was actually getting better and that because she was not given the correct care and attention she needed (like not being assigned a sitter when she was supposed to have one) she passed....there were many things this nurse told us in private (things we have recorded) that lead us to believe this very important family member passed without reason.

The COVID19 pandemic has created many travesties.....one being the pressure on the healthcare system. In times like this our family understands that the hospitals may be short-staffed and extremely busy, but the care and QUALITY of care for their patients should still be top priority. We are creating this gofundme page because we feel that my grandmother deserves justice behind her death. We feel that sharing her story will help spread the word on these types of injustices and maybe help other families who have lost loved ones during this time. We understand that many people have truly and sadly lost their lives from COVID, but we strongly feel that our loved one was not one of them.

Typically this is not something we would want to do, but we know that this long road ahead is going to require tremendous amounts of time and money. Your support means the world to us as we go through the process of pursuing a private autopsy (around $3,500), the funeral ($6,000), a private lawyer (unknown amount), and most importantly grieve this loss that should not have happened. Wether it is sharing this gofundme post, donating, or simply just sending messages of condolences, we greatly appreciate anything at all!
