The Nellie Littlejohn Read to Lead Program provides a children’s book based on a traditional Cherokee story or historical figure to the children at the Dora Reed Childcare Center in Cherokee, North Carolina. Nellie worked at Dora Reed for many years and was a friend to everyone who knew her. She was a kind, loving soul and we were proud to name this program after her in 2022..
This year we are seeking donations to purchase 300 copies of the book Grandmother Spider Brings the Sun: A Cherokee Story by Geri Kearns, with illustrations by James Bernardin. Students in my Cherokee High School class will deliver the books to the Dora Reed Childcare Center as well as read the book to the kids there. The books are $7.95 each, but due to the generosity of the publisher we will be given a 40% discount on our order. That means, with shipping costs and GoFundMe transaction fees, we need to raise $1,600. Any amount that you can give will bring us closer to our goal and will be greatly appreciated! S’gi!
