<div>On June 18th, our father, Rick Goldstein, suffered a transient ischemic attack (TIA) — a mini-stroke. During this episode, he fell on the parking lot pavement and injured his left hand.

</div>

</div>

<div>Early the next morning, while awaiting admission to a stroke specialty hospital, everything changed. Rick experienced a massive stroke, followed by a serious brain bleed. Twice in 24 hours, we nearly lost him.

</div>

</div>

<div>Rick survived. But the stroke and hemorrhagic conversion left him with a devastating loss of mobility on his left side. He is in a wheelchair and unable to complete any activities of daily living without assistance. He is working hard each day in physical and occupational therapy to recover and regain his mobility and independence, but the damage was severe and the recovery is slow. It is impossible to predict how much mobility he will regain, but we do know that he will remain disabled and in need of some assistance for the rest of his life. The next four months of his recovery are crucial as the majority of gains are made by stroke victims in the first six months.

<div>His injured left hand — untreated during those critical ICU hours — developed a severe and complicated wound, further limiting his ability to recover. He currently has no use of his left hand, making balance and coordination much more difficult to achieve than if he were recovering from a stroke alone.

<div>Our once-independent, active dad now requires full-time assistance just to get through each day.

<div><strong>A Family Man Who’s Always Shown Up for Others</strong>

</div>

<div>Rick has always been the emotional heart of our family — loving, nostalgic, and selfless. He’s the kind of man who shows up for others in good times and bad, without hesitation. Until June, he was fully mobile and active, enjoying time with his children, grandchildren, and friends.

<div>Now, it’s our turn to show up for him.

<div><strong>Why We’re Asking for Help</strong>

</div>

<div>Rick is being relocated from Las Vegas, Nevada to Denver, Colorado so he can receive the family and medical support he desperately needs. Nevada ranks last in the nation for senior healthcare access — with a severe shortage of in-home caregivers and a one-year wait for nursing home placement.

</div>

<div>Colorado offers much better healthcare options and — just as important — several family members nearby who can support him physically and emotionally. Rick will be living with his daughter, Nikki, and granddaughter, Carly, with help from son Robert, brother Alex, niece Laura, and granddaughter Rose.

<div><strong>Even with this support network, here’s what we’re facing</strong>:

<li>Permanent mobility loss, the exact degree is still unknown

<li>Full loss of use of his left hand, compounding mobility issues, leading to...

<li>Need for a motorized wheelchair (estimated $3,400 — not covered by Medicare)

</li>

<li>Requires ongoing caregiving well beyond what Medicare will cover

</li>

<li>Adaptive equipment and home modifications as his needs evolve

</li>

<div>It is our greatest desire to keep Rick out of an institutional facility and help him live the rest of his life with dignity, family, and love. In order to do this, we need access to extensive resources — both equipment and care.
