Our dearest Waleska needs our help! On March 2, 2018, Wally was diagnosed with stage 2 Invasive Ductal Carcinoma which has spread to her lymph nodes. Two days later, this amazing woman ran her first 15K! Fortunately, further imaging shows no widespread metastasis, but this cancer is aggressive, requiring immediate treatment.
Waleska Rios-Derrick is a Wonder Woman. She is the best friend I’ve ever had, an amazing friend to everyone who knows her. She is mother to Teenage twins Alejandro and Diego and sweet Selva, wife to Mac Derrick, with extended family in southern Washington and Peurto Rico. She is a vital member of the inpatient oncology team as night shift Charge RN at St. Joseph Medical Center. Her smile lights up any room she enters, her laugh is contagious, her presence brings so much joy and peace. This is not fair.
This diagnosis is unexpected, horrific, and terrifying from many perspectives. This woman is important to so many people, and this is devastating. Her treatment plan includes immediate surgery, followed by aggressive chemotherapy and radiation, leaving her unable to work for an indeterminate amount of time. She is the primary provider of her household, a wonderful friend, wife, mother, daughter, coworker, and human being. Cancer is never fair to anyone, but this just breaks my heart. No one deserves this, and Wally is no exception.
