On Christmas Eve, while most families were wrapping gifts and preparing for joy, our world stopped. My dad was diagnosed with Stage 3 laryngeal cancer—cancer of his voice box and vocal cords. A disease that doesn’t just attack the body, but steals something deeply personal: his voice. The same voice that told us bedtime stories, sang along to the radio, gave advice, laughed loudly, and comforted us when life was hard. There is nothing festive about hearing the word cancer on Christmas Eve. Nothing prepares you for watching your dad try to process a diagnosis that changes everything in an instant. In the coming weeks, my dad will endure 7 long weeks of radiation along with chemotherapy. Treatments that are brutal, exhausting, and unforgiving. The side effects will be severe—pain, extreme fatigue, difficulty swallowing, loss of voice, and the inability to work or live life as he once did. This road will be physically and emotionally devastating, not just for him, but for our entire family. My dad is strong. He always has been. But strength doesn’t pay medical bills. Strength doesn’t cover travel costs, missed work, medications, or the everyday expenses that don’t stop just because cancer shows up uninvited.
