Help Support Nicholas’s Recovery & Rehabilitation
On The morning of August 10, 2020 We got a phone call that would change our
lives in an instant.
Our Nicholas who is a Son, Brother,
Uncle, Grand-Son, Nephew, Cousin,
Friend, Fiancé and A Father to his
Unborn Child was in the Emergency
Room in Critical condition. All of his
organs were shutting down and they
were trying to get him stable. Our World stopped!!
As we rushed to the hospital,
You can only imagine the thoughts and
fears that we felt.
Once at the hospital they proceeded to
tell us that Nicholas was still undergoing a multitude of test and that he had less
than a 25% chance of surviving the
injuries to his body.
And the next 24 hours would be critical.
Now with very little information we
were asked to leave due to
Covid- Hospital guidelines.
The Doctor said once they got him to the Critical Care Unit they would call and
just one immediate family member could come back to the hospital to see him.
That had to be the hardest four hours of our lives waiting to be able to go back to the hospital and actually see him.
In the days following while in ICU he
suffered a stroke and had to have
emergency surgery and he also had to
endure five additional surgical
procedures over 5 days.
He has had to have dialysis every other
day due to his kidneys being completely
shut down. He had to have a blood
transfusion and will have to have another one soon.
Nicholas has survived the brain stroke
but the damage to his brain has resulted his left side of his body being
Simi -paralyzed with accompanied loss
of feeling on the left side of the body that challenges him from leading a normal life without intensive physical therapy and
rehabilitation . He of course has mobility issues where his brain doesn’t fully
communicate with his body to move. He will need to learn to Walk again along
with many other daily activities that
most of us take for granted.
He has been showing promising signs of
improvement which gives us hope that
eventually we can bring him to some
level of normalcy and help him begin a
new life.
Doctors have told us that once out of the hospital he will need dialysis 3 times a
week. He will also need to be
transitioned to A Physical Rehabilitation Hospital to get the level of care for his
injuries as well as his Stroke.
Because of the location of the trauma to his brain, the doctors expect there to be deficits in his speech and understanding, as well as mobility so therapy and
rehabilitation will also play significant
roles in
his recovery.
Right now, there are many unknowns.
The knowns are: Nicholas is alive,
his brain is loopy from meds, but mostly
intact, the stroke he had left him with
damage to the left side of his body.
He will need several months of physical
therapy
to hopefully regain mobility. His kidneys aren’t functioning at all so he needs
dialysis on an every other day rotation.
He is also receiving blood transfusions as his blood count has been very low.
He has compartment syndrome in his
right arm so he has already had five
surgical procedures and will require
more including skin graphs.
He has developed a few blood clots that put him at high risk for more strokes and heart attacks and they can’t put him on
blood thinners due to the wound vacs he has to have on his arm due to the
compartment syndrome.
We don't know what the financial future will look like, but it is likely that there will be many expenses that aren't covered by insurance.
There are so many unknowns for Nick’s
future right now, and all of them come
with significant expenses. Although
Nicholas has health insurance, we know that it will not cover all of his medical
expenses and the cost of long-term
rehabilitation and home care. Nicholas
and his fiancé had just moved into a new apartment last month and were just
getting situated and preparing for their
baby’s arrival in February 2021.
Unfortunately their apartment is located
up a few flight of stairs so the family will also needs to to find a more suitable
living arrangement eventually that is
potentially wheelchair accessible along with handicap accessibilities for Nicholas when he comes home from the Physical Rehabilitation Hospital as well as
purchasing a wheelchair, and other
handicap accessible items.
Would you please consider donating to
this fund so Nicholas’s family doesn’t
have to bear the brunt of the costs of the medical care and rehabilitation?
There have been so many people who
have reached out and asked how they
can help us, specifically in a financial way. Therefore, we have created this page for
people to have a place to help.
We know that these times could be
difficult for many people with the state that
our world is in and we are in awe of how many people have already reached out
with the thought of our family in mind.
No one can ever prepare you for this
journey and it’s one we wouldn’t wish upon anyone. We are so thankful for the
healing hand God has placed upon
Nicholas and are in awe of the Miracles we have witnessed in his recovery thus
far.
We love all of you and any
support is deeply appreciated and
extremely helpful. Thank you to all who
have been fighting this battle with us so
far - the prayers, texts, calls, videos,
cards, meals, check-ins - your support
means the world to Nicholas and our
family. ❤️
