Help Support Monkey Haven
We are in desperate need of your support to help feed our animals and save Monkey Haven, our Primate Rescue Centre. Due to COVID-19 we sadly had to close our doors to protect our animals, visitors, volunteers and staff. Don Walser, Founder of Monkey Haven, launched a heartfelt video message to ‘Help Support Monkey Haven’ during the crisis, and we’d be enormously grateful if you could watch and share Don’s story, or make a donation to help support our animals through these very worrying and uncertain times - thank you.
Monkey Haven is a charity that provides sanctuary for creatures in crisis. We care for rescued monkeys, gibbons, meerkats, reptiles, owls and many other exotic animals. Some have been bullied, from previous lives, others have been rescued from the cruel pet trade and a few have injuries which mean that they wouldn’t survive in the wild. Every animal at the Haven arrives with a story – and in many cases, it’s heartbreaking. Some used to live in zoos where they failed to thrive and others were kept as pets in appalling conditions. Our sanctuary provides residents with a second chance of happiness - to live enjoyable lives in a tranquil environment, with all the food, care and love that they need.
However, we rely heavily on a seasonal income to fund our overheads and charitable work, and after a wet and quiet winter and now Covid-19, the Haven’s closure has left us financially strained and incredibly worried about its future.
How will your donations help?
Due to us loosing a crucial source of income from our many visitors this Easter and beyond, we are now purely relying on donations to help see us through the months to follow. Although our animals will continue to receive the same exemplary love and care throughout this period, we have to admit it will be a real struggle financially to fund their necessities, as well as on-going cleaning, heating, medication, and veterinary bills. Many of our animals require extra supplements and medication, in order to help stay on top of illnesses they picked up before they came to us. For example, Malta, our Grivet Monkey, requires daily epilepsy medication, whilst our endangered Cotton Top Tamarins require special vitamins in order to keep them healthy, following their malnourished pasts.
A few of our rescue missions
After a traumatic start in life as victims of the illegal pet trade, we rescued a group of Grivet monkeys who now live a happy and enriched life at the Haven. Malta was discovered going through customs at Malta Airport, bound up in cloth and tape, and hidden in a sports bag. Pepper was found at an airport in Paris, and is small and slightly deformed from maltreatment. Soma used to be kept in a parrot cage and Angèle had also been badly neglected by a private owner. Djimmy, the Cherry-Crowned Mangabey, was found wandering along a busy road in Germany in 2007. Nobody knew what to do with him, so he was sent to a cat and dog rescue shelter where he was left in isolation for seven years. He started showing abnormal behaviour such as pulling out his own fur and he would attempt to grab anyone who came near him, just to get attention. Djimmy was given a toy pig to bond with, which is now never out of his sight. It was a long slow process of rehabilitation, but he now lives contentedly at Monkey Haven with his toy pigs and another rescued Mangabey, called Buna. Click here for more information...
Milan, the Squirrel Monkey, was in a bad way as the owner who kept her didn’t know how to care for her properly. She’s had a broken arm caused by being forced into clothing, such as the flamenco dress that she was made to wear. She also has a humped back caused by a preventable condition called rickets, which leads to fragile bones and deformities. This is common in animals that don’t get enough sunlight or a proper balanced diet. Milan is now receiving regular specialist care and attention at our sanctuary where she is thriving. We are now running the Haven on a skeleton team, cutting corners where we can to help preserve what funds we have left. We know that so many of you will have your own struggles too, and we massively appreciate anyone who has already donated to the Haven’s GoFundMe page, the littlest donation goes a long way.
