Kenny has Long QT Syndrome . Last Wednesday he was at school and had a cardiac event which caused him to faint and fall down the stairs he was climbing. He has no serious injuries from the fall, thank goodness. The school nurse administered CPR and he was subsequently airlifted to Hershey Medical Center. He has been medically sedated pretty much the entire time since he was admitted.
On Friday the doctors decided Kenny's heart needed some time to rest and recover from all of the stress it had gone through so he had surgery to be put on an ECMO machine . As of today (Sunday) he is doing well on the ECMO. He was awake for a brief time today and was able to respond to some requests from the medical staff (shaking his head, wiggling his toes, etc). He also hasn't had any abnormal heart activity in more than 24 hours. This is good news, but we can't start doing a happy dance quite yet.
The medical staff is taking things day by day. We don't have a sense for what the next weeks (or even months) might look like. As you can imagine, this sort of uncertainty can be daunting and stressful for his family.
We don't have a specific goal in mind for this GoFundMe campaign because we just don't know what the future holds. Kenny's mother has great insurance which "should" cover most or all of his treatment, but I guess that just remains to be seen. Both Kenny's dad (my brother) and his mom have supportive employers when it comes to time off, but it's possible one or both of them may end up on FMLA (unpaid leave). Kenny also has an older sister and his step-mother is pregnant so he's going to be a big brother! We want to make sure that everyone is taken care of. If you've ever had a family member in the hospital for an extended period of time you know that you get sick of the crappy coffee and the vending machine food so just helping them to cover some of those incidentals would be great.
