Houa John Lee Healing Journey

Hello families, friends and supporters!

For those who are not aware, Houa John Lee, had a traumatic accident on August 4, 2019. He's been diagnosed with a complete spinal cord injury resulting in paralysis from the chest down. He also suffered fractured ribs and a broken wrist.

John is a 49 year old husband and father of 6 children. He enjoys spending time with his family and friends on camping outings or just barbecuing in the backyard. He’s also kind and considerate who keeps himself busy which included the activity leading up to the accident.

To give you a little background, John was assisting his friend in trimming branches from a tree so they can set up a tent for their daughter’s wedding. As always, John volunteered to climb up to cut the branch. Unfortunately, he lost his balance and fell. He was unconscious for about 30 seconds after the horrific impact. John was rushed to Regions Hospital and underwent two surgeries to align his broken right wrist and his spinal cord. The good news is that the surgeries were successful. What is unknown is that there are no guarantees if he will be able to walk again. Only time will tell.

My dad survived the most devastating moments of his life and we were at peace. In hope of a speedy recovery, we were looking forward to his physical therapy sessions; however, his good health and spirit quickly turned. He was diagnosed with pneumonia. His lungs were filled with fluids which made it difficult for him to breathe. He was coughing phlegm, running high fevers and chills. We were afraid his body was not going to be able to fight the infection and recover since he just had major surgeries.

John also served in the Navy on board the USS Trenton during the Persian Gulf War as an aviation support technician in 1990-1994. Because John is a Veteran, he was transferred from Regions hospital to Va Medical.

John’s primary goal right now is for a speedy recovery and get back to work so he can support his family.  Another goal of his is also to attend the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. His daughter, Sunisa Lee, is an elite gymnast on the US National Senior team hoping to make the Olympic team. Whether she makes the team or not, John is determined to go to Tokyo, Japan to support the US Women’s gymnastics team with his daughter.

Despite his struggles, He made it through another devastating life moment and will live to hear all your well wishes, feel your love and see your generous support. The road to recovery will be a long one and he will need lots of physical therapy and treatments to improve his health. John will stay at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center to continue his healing journey for the next three months.

Thank you for taking the time to read his story. With all of the unexpected life-threatening incidents, the treatment expenditures, medical and other financial strain weighs heavily and the foreseeable future is uncertain; however, with your words of encouragement and generous monetary donations, I know my dad and my family will get through this. I hope you will take part in his recovery journey.
