Many of you may have already seen Jesse's fb post about his recent diagnosis. If you have not read it already and would like to see it, you can find it here: Jesse's story
Earlier this year, Jesse England was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called a malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST). It formed on the top side of his left ankle about 6 years ago, and early last year began to grow in size very rapidly. This type of sarcoma is notoriously difficult to diagnose and is incredibly aggressive. After over a year of dealing with a misdiagnosis, and many weeks waiting to hear results from pathology, Jesse is now on the right track for the care he needs to battle cancer.
As of right now, Jesse has received 25 treatments of radiation and is now healing before he undergoes surgery. 5 weeks of daily radiation takes a huge toll on the body, and Jesse will be recovering for approximately 6 weeks after his final radiation treatment. In this time, he hopes to spend time with friends and family, and enjoy the beautiful weather as much as possible.
The surgery date is set for Friday August 16th. This day is subject to change as we enter the month of August, but at this time seems to be pretty solid.
It is possible that once cancer margins have been removed (meaning the tumor - which has already grown back - as well as the surrounding tissue) there will be another pathology test to determine if the surgery successfully removed enough surrounding tissue. If this is the case, he will be in the hospital with his open wound for 4-5 days waiting for pathology results. Once the surgeon has reattached his tendon with an allograft (donor tendon) a plastic surgeon will then take tissue possibly from his thigh to cover the wound from the cancer. Doctors hope to have Jesse back at home to begin healing approx. 1-2 weeks after surgery. From there, he will be resting in bed (or couch) for 3 weeks before he is able to begin any physical therapy.
Hospital visits are very welcome. Please contact me (Minhi) if you'd like to visit Jesse post surgery at the hospital. I will be with him for 4-5 days in the hospital during and after surgery. After the surgery, we will be opening up our home for guests to come and spend time with Jesse as he is recovering. You can schedule to visit and make Jesse a home cooked meal here: meal train
It is possible that Jesse may receive additional surgeries in the future, but this is unclear at this time.
After 2 CT scans in a 4 month window, the doctors believe that metastasis has not occurred. Doctors will be monitoring any changes in Jesse's organs closely throughout the duration of his treatment - specifically the lungs and liver where this type of cancer tends to travel. This is great news - as long as his organs appear unaffected, he will not be on chemotherapy. The most recent imaging scans were on August 1st, and there was no visible change.
All GoFundMe funds will go to Jesse for medical bills and to subsidize his healing while he is unable to work.
Thank you everyone for any and all of your help, I will be keeping everyone updated through this campaign of Jesse's journey.
